Getting to be that time of year my lads, what do you hope to accomplish this coming season?
I am hoping to catch more than I've ever caught, have a good time and above all, see what it will teach me about my local wildlife.

I want to get some beaver this season, I know the fur isn't worth a whole lot so enough to make myself a blanket would be nice. I'm also craving the meat, been a couple years since I had it.

Tail makes the world's best cracklins. People think I'm crazy for eating beaver, but a haunch roasted right tastes better than roast beef to me. Glad I found another crazy bastard who eats what they catch. You eat muskrat too?

I actually would bring the muskrat to my mom who would stew it in an old family recipe (Marylanders love their muskrat) Unfortunately I don't know that one.
As for beaver, I just roast the legs/ haunches after marinating it with some Worcestershire and a bit of Emirel's Original Essence seasoning. Roast it in the oven with a bunch of potatoes and carrots like you would a pork or beef roast. You could experiment with using some of the grease/ blood and cutting it with beef stock for an au-jus. I've cooked them over a campfire and everyone loved it, no seasoning but salt/ pepper, it's just a tasty meat.
I will try to get a hold of the old Herter's muskrat recipes for you.

awesome. thank you. i agree, muskrat is a terrible name. i've never encountered one but always though they were...not great animals. but i read a hunting magazine that basically said the same thing about the unfortunate name.

if i can get one, will definitely try it.
i got over my squeamishness for odd meats when i first tried squirrel.

They are baby- easy to trap because their runs are easily visible and they don't divert from them. Duke 110 bodygrips are also quite cheap, and at that size the quality isn't that important. Very soft fur too, I lined a pair of mittens

I use a couple different packs depending on where I'm setting. River and sloughs I'll use my plastic pack or woven basket when I'm on snowmobile doing marten bobcat and wolf it's going to be the plastic one again or a standard pack frame

Every wetland drainage is going to have muskrat. Look for trails through cattail patches. It is going to be much easier to trap them than hunt them. I only ever saw a couple alive, (ran one down and killed it with a stick once)

How do I into trapping guys? Shitload of rabbits in my country, and they're a pest species. Wouldn't mind trapping a few and collecting the pelts.
