I carry guns and sometimes I carry weed, but never both. Not only is it potentially a worse crime (even here in CO), but the two shouldn't be mixed to begin with.

But it's not though. Still Federally illegal, and yes they can prosecute. Federal Supremacy Clause.

ESPECIALLY since you have to tell the government you don't do weed on a sworn statement (form 4473) in order to purchase the firearm in the first place, and lying on that is a Federal felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Depends on the situation. If I'm just innawoods in Indiana where I live, I've probably got weed but nogunz. If I'm somewhere there's wildlife that may require it, I've probably got a rifle but no weed. If I'm going thruhiking multiday, I've probably got a bag of weed in my pack, a dugout in my pocket, and a pistol cc'd (I smoke weed instead of cigarettes when I'm on long hikes cuz cigarettes would get smashed and weed takes the edge off the nicotine cravings).

It's pretty stupid to not carry a firearm or at least some sort of potent weapon while in the wilderness, especially in the mountains. God forbid you actually encounter a situation where you need to defend your life or another, the cost of carrying a weapon compared to not doing so is so pathetically small it's not even a factor.

That's the thing about self-defence. It's always unexpected and nearly always a surprise of some sort. You can't just go, "No need for a weapon, I'll just avoid the troublesome areas," because, while doing so is the first line of defence against danger, sometimes trouble goes looking for you. And since you can't predict when it's going to find you, even if it's a 1/1,000 chance, your life is infinitely valuable. So anything you can do practically to ensure that your life doesn't end if trouble finds you, is time and effort well-spent.

No. I live in a nogunz country so it's a pain in the ass. Obvious exception is if I'm with a hunter or going out to target shoot. Plus there isn't a huge need when I'm the only one for as far as the eye can see.

Yes you should be mindful of what the absolute worst case scenario is so you can take some steps to mitigate that risk, I assume you wear your seatbelt while you drive and pay attention to what other drivers are doing? You probably also carry a first aid kit of some flavor while your out as well. Carrying a gun responsibly is done to help manage a risk faced like a lot of other things we do

Slow down and comprehend what you read, Anon. Notice the final sentence of my paragraph: "So anything you can do practically to ensure that your life doesn't end if trouble finds you, is time and effort well-spent." The key word is PRACTICALLY. Do everything you can within a practical limit to preserve your life.

Carrying a firearm while /out/ carries almost no cost, but the cost of being in a situation where you need one but don't have one is infinitely high. Whereas while driving in traffic, the cost of driving in an active and defensive manner is infinitely less than not doing so. You may get to your destination 10 minutes slower, but the other cost is your life, so the two don't even compare.

this is primarily because people that arm themselves are better at suicide, but it also may reflect the fact that people who arm themselves associate with more criminal types.

either way, carrying a gun is more likely to get you killed than not carrying one.

Correlation does not equal causation, and you admit yourself that these stats are probably due to gun suicides. And if you're right about the second part, it would be your association with criminal types that is your undoing, not the carrying of a weapon.

Which is what I found dishonest. You could have said "Gun-owners who attempt suicide more often succeed." That would be verifiable.
If you have a citation that shows that people who legally carry guns (not including LEOs or military) are victims of gun violence more often than those who don't, I'll apologize. But that kind of statement would be very hard to prove.
