Hey /out/ Florida fag here

What are some good non perishable foods to get? What are some that can be prepared indoors?

Are MRE's good?

As you know it's hurricane season in Florida and I was lucky enough to get all the food I needed but I wanted to create a stockpile while I can so I don't have to go to the markets and deal with the crowds.

The reason I ask for some foods that can be prepared indoors is because before and after a hurricane hits the outer bands hit which make cooking outdoors not possible. And you obviously can't cook outdoors when the actual storm lands

This is just a small fraction of what I had for irma. Not in the picture was all my water, rice, eggs, canned foods and trail mix.

If you're in a house a stockpile of canned food and minute rice.. What ever you normally eat that doesn't go in a fridge or freezer. All the canned goods where gone 2 days before the storm in my publix but the bags of mixed potato's where all still there same with the pickles and dried rice products. Goes to show you that folks who raid the stores first aren't the brightest in the pack.

Plus I have gas stoves. And even without power the gas stays flowing. As long as you can light it with a long necked lighter ur good.

The storms rarely last 24 hours. After that you can cook out/doors have enough food that you can eat for 24 hours without cooking.

Thing about storms is you're not on the move so having a large stockpile is easy enough. Also make sure you eat your stockpiled food before stormy season so you know how you like to prepare it and aren't eating some super salty shit food during a storm.

The MREs that they brought in are shit. They took everything they didn't want from the military versions and just repackaged them. It's all fucking pastas and doesn't fill you up, plus no wetnaps, toilet paper, and all the other luxuries the military versions have. I'm going to make my own.

The most surprising thing I've missed in the past week are vegetables, and I usually hate vegetables. I'll get some small cans of green beans and corn for that.

I've also grown tired of drinking mostly water so Gatorade packages will be in my stockpile.

Something to chew on, even as a distraction would be nice so maybe some gum.

the MREs came with pop tarts and they've been great for breakfast so that will stay along with the crackers and jelly.

For whatever reason my appetite has doubled so that's something to take into account when keeping food.

Buy a freeze dryer and save your leftovers. TOTMs made by sopakco are good, tasty too. Although if you really wanna be prepared for storms or shtf scenarios then you're gunna want my patriot supply, they have sales now and again and some right talkshow hosts will give you codes to save on it. They also sell heirloom seeds. They're all guaranteed for like 25 years too

I live in the Caribbean OP, we are about to get wreck again. To answer your question;

>Canned Vienna sausages (Great for making soups, or eating as a snack)
>Chef Boyardee cans
>5 ounces canned chicken. The canned turkey/pork taste like shit.
>Soda crackers
>Meat spreads
>UHT milk (look that shit up, it is milk that doesn't need refrigeration and doesn't expire as fast)
>Coffee
>Campbell's soup
>Mashed potatoes in powder
>1 gallon of water per person per day
>Child juices that comes in pouches (like Caprison)
>Plastic plates and forks

Some tips,

>Before the storm, get some beach coolers and fill them with ice, this protect your food and gives you ice for your juices as well
>Fill some buckets with water to flush your toilet, those Walmart plastic storage containers work very well

a propane BBQ with a side burner and a few spare bottles can meet your cooking needs for weeks, for the days with high winds get a small backpacking stove that you can use inside when the power's down to heat up chef boyardee or make pasta/mac and cheese, what the fuck ever the options are limitless

These guys know what's up. Take a good look at what you're eating now and extend it a week or two. You can time the purchases around sales and probably come out ahead in $$$.

It also keeps you from building up a stockpile that sits around aging. You get those shit days when you HAVE to eat MREs to rotate your supply, why go through that? And normal food makes morale better when the crisis hits. Some foods can be prepared cold (canned soups and some dried pastas and beans) even if they're better hot.

Where long term storage food and hiking food like Mountain House comes in is your bug out bag. Sometimes there's a mandatory evacuation and you'll want to be ready in case things are rough wherever you end up.

MRE's and other meals like them are fine if you have to or plan on leaving your house during that type of situation. If you plan on staying put canned foods and dry goods are always going to taste better. If you want to stock up and can't do it all at once just buy an extra can or bag of rice when you do your regular shopping put them in a tote in your closet and save them for a rainy day.

My buddy brought MREs for an overnight kayaking/camping trip. I'm not sure where he got them, but they were pretty good.

I also recommend this brand of ramen, pic related. It's spicy beef flavor.
1. boil water
2. add noodles
3. add spice when noodles loosen up
4. add eggs
5. add veggies

For long term survival, MREs and pre-packaged shit kinda sucks. The only good thing about them is the light weight. Other than that they are expensive and crappy. For good prepping food, ask your local Mormons. They have facilities and cheap canned, dried food. Best deal in the world for prepping.
