Whenever I'm /out/ing deep in nature, why do I invariably assume everyone I encounter is potentially hostile and will harm me? I know it's irrational thinking, but I can't help it.

I watch a lot of crime documentaries and I'll never get used to the fucked up things that people are capable of doing to each other.

I spend a lot of time innawoods and urbexing in my town. When I bump into someone during the day I'm not usually overly concerned, even though it's very rare and they're quite out of place in the spots I frequent. When I see someone at night (a campfire a ways off or a flashlight moving through the woods) I fucking freeze and hide. Nobody you can trust will be lurking around the train tracks, dam ruins, or old brick mill in the middle of fucking nowhere in the middle of the night.

If you're alone or at all vulnerable, just avoid people if you can.

It depends on the location anon. If it's a place where people are camping then there's nothing out of the ordinary. if it's a redneck town with no /out/ culture or activities, and it's entirely industrial and private property, it's a different story.

Yes I agree. Wonder if the other posters here who are criticizing OP for being careful have been mugged, or had to retreat from a mugging attempt. Frankly you are better safe than sorry, especially in areas where help is nonexistent or very far away. I like exploring industrial areas and just plain going out for a walk at night too, and the risk is certainly there. It's like spinning a roulette wheel with just one of the numbers being the bad one. If and when that number comes up, it can be pretty scary just how quickly a situation goes from feeling safe to dangerous and possibly deadly.

There's been some pretty bad city and state park murders over the years and it would be unwise to ignore them. Doesn't matter if they're relatively rare when it's happening to you.

Feelings of discomfort manifest as a result.
Situational awareness is important. Caution is a natural reaction. If you're way /out/ it's not irrational to be concerned about other people. The concern is reasonable and maybe even productive depending on the situation. Panic will never be helpful.
When it happens just make a mental note, stay aware, and avoid if necessary.

I think the right wing media is good at engineering fear now. I think when they first started gaining steam, they were only exploiting fear. I don't know what it is about growing up in the country, but unless you're overly friendly with your neighbors, everyone seems like a threat you have to size up and protect yourself from. The right wing media exploited this. Then they figured out just how viable it is to work this fear in suburbia and so on, and now they don't just exploit it, they create it.

But good ol' backwoods mistrust is a long standing tradition that came before them.

This. I never was scared of other people in the woods until I got older and became more aware of people. Even being a grill, I never gave it much thought until a few years ago when I began to realize how fucked people really are.

For instance, I was 16 when my stepmother's brother moved into the house. He had just gotten out of prison, for what I was told was "taking the blame for a fight his friends got in" and that he was really innocent. I only found out maybe 5 years ago that he was convicted of taking part in the rape and murder of a young woman at the local lake. She was beat so badly that they couldn't even make out her features, and after being raped and killed, her body was dumped in the lake.

I used to frequent the area and even lived just a road away. Some of my best childhood memories are there, and I was never scared of walking alone at night through it, and even went skinny dipping a few times with some friends. At most, I was afraid of raccoons, or being yelled at by a cop (???) But now that I /know/ the history of my town, and how popular a dumping site the lake is for bodies, coupled with the hillbilly psycho mentalities of most of the people around here, it makes me have second thoughts even walking down my road in the city late at night anymore.

If you read my comment, you'll see that I claim that most everybody is afraid, and that fearmongering is a favorite tactic of both sides...
Fear is sold to the masses, whether it's fear of neo-Nazis, climate change and killer cops or fear of Muslim terrorists, FEMA concentration camps, and Jew communists.
Some of those things may be real problems... but the kind of rabid fear that the media inspire is ridiculous.
Look at the yearly headlines:
"Worst shark attack summer EVAR!"
"Salt will kill you! Oh wait, it's good for you! Fat will kill you! Oh wait..."
"Killer clowns! Bath salts cannibals!"

Fear sells, no matter what side of the political fence you're on. Stop buying.

What does that even mean? Public sector is a large portion of the economy anyways; if an area has a large military presence, does that automatically make it a "welfare" recipient because federal money is spent there? Are research laboratories in Idaho and Alaska considered "welfare" projects for the purposes of this graphic? I don't think there's a terrible amount of information here.
