Any tips for using a bait caster reel?

I use braided line, and an electrical tape backing.

I haveadjusted the brake and tensions knobs that I can cast 8 times out of 10 without tangling the reel. How do stop the tangling all together?

If you can avoid fucking up 8 out of 10 times, that just means you're fucking up the other 2.

Stop fucking up. Take your time, pick deliberate targets, pay attention to the cast. Try not to cast STRAIGHT into the wind if you can avoid it. Be aware of the surface of the water/overhead limbs n' shit/boat gunwales, etc, that you might snag the lure on or hit with the rod tip that fouls the cast (this was a big issue for me when I got my first 7'6" rod coming off a 6.5ft rod--kept hitting the water with the tip).

I prefer baitcasters to spinning reels but they're a pain in the ass

Yes, don't use a baitcaster. They're needlessly complex and you're just gonna end up being frustrated by them unless you buy a really high end one with a good braking system.

Mine broke and does that constantly as well as just stops reeling in. I find holding your thumb above the spool helps a lot, but it takes some practice to not stop your line short.

Baitcaster reels are the manual transmissions of the fishing world.

30 years ago, the were superior but now the automatics have surpassed their performance.

Just get a regular fishing reel.

Idk if u still around, but the fishin thread has my tips for baitcasters in the pastebin in the OP.

It takes practice. Once you get the casting motion, you will be set. Also he careful with the braid for reasons mentioned in the Pastebin.

Seriously it's probably throwing too light of stuff. Just chunk 1 oz stuff then work your way down. Quit getting greedy on distance.

OP here
My dad got it for me about 10 years ago, and me and him just got back into fishing. Turns out my bearings are shot since the reel was making screaming noises while casting today. My dad has the same pole/reel setup, and I tried his and had no problem at all.

I went out and bought a $30 spinning reel combo today from walmart to try it out before dropping more $$$ on a more expensive set up.

This. I have a curado e, curado i and casitas. Bought the casitas most recently because it was LHR and on sale and I was convinced that the curado would shit on it. While obviously the curados were better, the smoothness of the cast on even middle tier shimano reels are as good as Lew's or Abu Garcia's top tier. Same with Daiwa but you're paying a little more for a Tatula type R or so on

I've had reels that do it to themselves. But being I used a spincast and fly fished until I was 18, I had some troubles with casting at first, I'd try chunking the lure way too hard

If you've never had that happen to a baitcaster then you've either not used one much, or you're full of shit.
