Has anyone else brought a shortwave radio with them when you go out? What radio do you use? What are your favorite stations?

I use a Tecsun PL-380, enjoy listening to some commie radio from Cuba.

I have a PL-660. I take it to the beach in San Diego when I visit my old man and many Asian and South American stations come in very well. One time I got RCI like a local FM station; that was weird as hell.

I have pic related, it does have a very wide range at all but it can pick up lower end stuff which is where most of the activity is anyway. Unfortunately I live in America so all I can ever seem to pick up is that fucking WWCR station and a bunch of random mexican/cuban/etc shit because I'm in Florida.

Not shortwave, but actually very long wave. Here's a radio I take while /out/ because the sounds it picks up are at audio frequencies, but are electromagnetic. Most, if not all of what it receives is naturally produced by interactions between the earth, atmosphere, and sun. It doesn't work at home, or in cities, or near power lines, because their 60 Hz radiation overwhelms the receiver.

If you're in the North America there's no reason to get one. You're 30 years too late.

Radio Romania
Turkey
Slovakia and Czechoslovakia via WRMI

Stations you can hear sometimes if conditions are good:

Radio New Zealand
BBC
Deutsch Welle

What you will hear the most:

PREACHERS

WBCQ is an American station from Maine that has a lot of strange and awkward shows but mostly carries preachers.

Shortwave is a quickly dying medium. I wouldn't advise you to spend much money if you get into it. Also keep in mind that we are at the bottom of the solar cycle.

Get one which does SSB and listen to hams. That is one thing America has lots of. There is often pirates around 6.9 - 7mhz of an evening. They are often lower down the band in the UK and operate on weekends and even day time. Some of them broadcast wile /out/. One pirate logging site had 10 US pirate logs just yesterday.

Depends on where you are and how much RF interference there is. If you can find a RF-quiet area on a coast or get to the top of a mountain or something you can get some great copies no matter where you are.

Is that just with the whip on your radio (assuming you're using a portable) or do you have an antenna? I sometimes pick up yuro stations in Colorado with a fucking Tecsun and a random-wire antenna.

Been experimenting with a random-wire these past couple of days. I'm picking up the east coast and Cuba fine. Maybe this weekend I'll take a drive somewhere out in the country to see if anything changes, I do live in a pretty busy area

I used to carry a Radio Shack shortwave radio innawoods in the 90s when shortwave was active. It's dead now. Except for WBCQ all the content is on the internet now.

If you can get to a RF-quiet area (I mean REALLY RF-quiet, like a wilderness area of something) you can pick up shit from all over the world with an active antenna. You can also filter out a lot of shit you don't want to receive if you're willing to get technical.

Hell, I was in FL during Irma and the entire region lost power. I pulled out the radio and I could pick up all sorts of shit that I never could otherwise.

Small 1kW South American stations were blasting in.

do you live in Cuba? if so, where about? Stayed in Havana last year, loved it. Would go back for the women. I don't know, maybe it was my connection, but I had trouble accessing the internet almost everywhere.

Havana was pretty dirty, as in you can see the coal plants, and smell those exhaust fume from all the old cars, but it was amazing to see. So I asked the chick if she wanted to go outside of the city to hike. So we go the central square, where the old american cars sit to wait for tourists to hire them. She spoke to the dude, and he brought us to this river about a 45 minutes south of the city. Only cost me $40 for the taxi, and he waited for use while we hiked for an hour and a bit and drove us back. It was a great time, well worth the price for the drive. The only thing that sucked about Cuba was the weed. They need to figure out how to grow that shit there, would be great for tourist and economy if they legalized it. Not really a pot head, but I like to smoke a joint when I'm drunk. I fucking loved my time there and look forward to going back. It's nice that I know a bit about the city and country not. I hung out the first day with some mexican photographer and we had a blast. Drinking that crystal beer from the time I woke up until the time I went to bed. It was nice that I didn't have to drive too.
