It can be worth it, but you need to stick with it for multiple seasons. Especially if you need to buy all the tools necessary to get started and/or plus up your local soil with loam or whatever.
Fuck subsistence farming though, that's all you'll ever do--subsist. Get by. You will never thrive, and all it takes is one bad year and you're destitute and starving.
