See: naval hospital Jacksonville controversy as of late. All the cunts had to do was stop using Instagram at work but it was too much for them to handle.

You better take photos of it, it will last far longer than your secret hideaway. Most of the awesome places I frequented for the first 20 years of my life are completely gone now. Thanks to drilling, urban sprawl, mining, "tourism", and lumbering. Oh and the tourism thing is building 50 cabins and 900 wheelchair access paths through like 500 acres of land, after it was lumbered.

LNT really doesn't mean much anymore when shit simply gets wiped off the face of the Earth.

In the 1980s I remember people would get fired for using the company phone to make private calls. Now pretty much every device is internet capable and hooked to an array of social media via a single login. Any modernly "hip" can spend 6 hours just trying to catch up after a day's work without the social media hookup.

i recently presided over a wedding and i started off with saying that its okay to take or two photos but if you are missing the wedding or ruining anyone else experience with the photo please take it down a notch. its really the same thing. do i snap one for the gram at the summit? absolutly, but im not standing in people's way and causing a scene trying to get the perfect photo. once in a while if there is something funny ill wait until no one is around and post up.

nature photography has been around since photography itself so i dont see the occasional photo being snapped as an issue... lack common sense and courtesy seem to be the problem.

What you're describing with obnoxious photographers is only half the issue.

The other half is that almost all cameras (both standalone and smartphone) geotag by default. Some of them you CANNOT turn this off without going out of your way to hack the firmware (looking at you Canon). And that's stored in the EXIF data, which almost no websites other than 4chan wipe.

Which means your super remote, aesthetically rundown abandoned cabin out in the wilderness you posted a few photos to instagram/facebook of? The entire internet knows exactly where it is now. Which means anybody with the desire can walk right to it using any smartphone or a cheapo GPS, and then trash it.

I find it really unbelieveable that there would be cameras with a GPS receiver constantly on. The battery consumption becomes shit and it won't work indoors anyway, so why would they include it? Granted, I am no camera expert -- which cameras do you mean?

As for Canons, there's the CHDK and Magic Lantern, which might help.

Most people use phones now which record GPS location in the EXIF of the image when it is taken. I think you need to put the phone in to something like airplane mode to stop the GPS function. Though, it would depend on the brand I guess. 4chan removes the EXIF of images now to prevent doxing.

In Android this can be turned off via Camera settings. I don't know of iPhones.

The GPS is not going to be on all the time in ANY device with a camera or the battery life will be shit, and it'll be difficult to sell something with such a poor battery life.

Turn off location services, turn off using location in the camera app, turn off 3G/4G and the EXIF looks clean location-wise.

Whether they embed some unique identifiers/last known location artificially to the camera sensor noise - it's possible but rather theoretical.

If you're going places that are being regularly accessed by the kind of people that spam pictures of their uninteresting lives on social media you are no better/more "authentic" than they are anyway. Actually go outdoors sometime, there are many places in the US where you can be 50 miles from the nearest person.
