Hey guys, I'm setting off at the end of this month on a long bicycle ride from Kansas City. I haven't seen the ocean in so long I'm thinking about going to the Gulf of Mexico (close enough to ocean). Any reason not to do this ride? Like going through the hot texas sun in mid summer? Or Gulf of Mexico sucks? Any reason at all, i'm open ears.

Oh, Maybe it's important to note that i'll be taking the most direct route to the gulf, from Kansas City through Oklahoma to Texas to the Gulf. Maybe it'd be better to go to the Louisiana coast?

East cost, South Carolina and south of that is the best for just "beach weather"

My favorite beaches are in Olympic National Park in the northwest, fucking gorgeous and lots of cool sea life, but it's not too sunny/warm.

The gulf is disgusting.

The beaches fucking suck until you get to the other side of Mobile Bay. I live on the beach in Alabama and our beaches are beautiful, especially compared to the East Coast. All white sand and turquoise water.

OP if you really want to bike to the gulf I'd be happy to give you a place to stay for a night, since literally it's the end of the road.

Sucks you can't bike all the way down to the Florida Keys. There isn't really any bike access, since it's just US1 the whole way.

Flower Garden and the Keys disagree. Not to mention the beachs of the Florida Gulf coast and even Gulf shores (though the oiling may have fucked it up, sadly - I used to vacation there as a child).

Not every part of the gulf looks like the water off Galveston.

Much of the gulf has a sandy bottom so visibility is not great. Down in the Keys it is clear as glass.

Hawaii is, well, Hawaii. Islands other than Oahu are best, though Oahu has a couple really great spots.

Nah I live in Gulf Shores, the oil literally did nothing but make a shitload of people money that live here. We get tiny tar balls wash up every once in a while but it's nothing major. Can't even tell there was an oil spill at all.

buckets load of cash man, and all I did was pilot a 30' landing craft vessel all day long, deploying containment and watching my deckhands play with the skimmers.

However, there are nice spots on the gulf side of florida, I remember as a kid Greyton beach being one of them (when green flies weren't swarming) destin had some nice spots spent many a 4th of july on "Crab island" which was just a sandbar-esque area where everyone would anchor and party. Ft. Lauderdale is nice too. Pensacola. There's quite a lot of spots. At least from my memory of staying with my aunt as an adolescent

Glad to hear it. That was a big piece of my childhood, I was seeing blood when the spill happened. Still makes my blood boil, people died and lots of damage WAS done, plenty that we don't see, because BP wanted to cut corners - and they get off by paying a little off the top of their profits. Criminal negligence with no criminal charges. Bastards.

I was living in Florida at the time, Pinellas county. We never had problems, but it really woke me up to how close everything is to disaster.

OP, it might be worth your time to take a look at their website. You don't necessarily need to buy maps; locals often know quieter roads anyway, but you can get a decent plan of how to avoid interstates on cycling-friendly roads and work the trip out from there.

This too unless you go to waaaaay south Texas. Once you get east of the Mississippi river though, the Gulf is nice.
