Let me start by saying im not new to hiking/camping at all. However ive never been somewhere where there is an actual risk of being lost. My camping and hiking experience are on well marked and travels trails and camping in marked areas. This week (M-Th) will be my first hike and camping experience where if me or my wife fuck up badly, we could potentially get lost. That said, it is still a state park and a fairly popular one. I cant imagine going more than a few hours without seeing SOMEONE somewhere. My "worst case" in my head is to spend a night out in the park.
I have 2 compasses, 2 space blankets, 100 feet of paracord, a signaling mirror, 2 flashlights, 2 2-liter camel backs, and a freeze dried "meal for 4". A "10 man first aid kit" rounds things out.
What more could/would you really need to spend an unexpected night /out/? Weather wont go below 60 any nights, no rain is expected this week, and like I said, its not THAT far from people. Hell I think cell phones will still get signal through most of the park (though I am not even sure if they can locate a GPS signal with my permission) Its going to be roughly 100ish miles in total so id prefer to not bring the kitchen sink, but going "ultra light" isnt an option either. I spent 12 years walking around with 82 pounds on my back so a 25-35 pound bag for 2 isnt going to be an issue. Just dont want to carry a full on stove, hatchet, when I cant imagine Ill be more than 50ish miles in any direction from a McDonalds.
Thoughts?
