Well its that time of year again guys, its getting colder and this winter I want to be snug as a bug.
What kind of silvers do you recommend?

I've never found the appeal to silkweight layers, they don't offer enough insulation to really make a difference and just add an extra layer you have to work through to piss/shit. The only use I can see for them is as an itch barrier that still transfers moisture well if you're wearing like a wool shirt or something.

You can also find closeout midweight merino base layers on places like campmor or Sierra Trading Post for around $30 a piece for namebrand stuff (such as Smartwool and WoolX)

Yes. Since it is much finer, it won't itch your skin and it can be much warmer since you have more fibers per cubed inch. The main problem is getting thick clothing that uses merino wool. Most companies cheap out since it is so expensive. For a "thick" wool sweater, you should expect to pay about $150-$200. Remember, there are better non-sheep wools out there. Merino is just the best for sheep. Like cashmere or a blend like possom-merino are far better than merino alone.

In order to get a garment of the same warmth as a polyester one, you need more polypropylene. This means a thicker and heavier garment.

It's not *much* worse as an insulator, but it IS worse. It's about 80-85% as good as polyester. If there were a big price gap it would have a use as poorfag gear, but there is NO price gap even among milsurp (80's era polypro costs the same as GWOT-era polyester grid fleece--$30 a set-- while being half as warm and twice as heavy).

Yes, polypropylene is even worse at handling stank. It also builds up static electricity faster and easier. I haven't found scientific wicking tests yet so I can't comment on whether it does or doesn't wick better than polyester with anything better than an opinion.
