I've been thinking a lot lately about land laws and "right to roam" and things like that. I live in Ohio, so there aren't many places to legally camp besides established campsites. I know you can camp in National Forests and BLM land, but again, there's not much of that here.

I'm intrigued by some countries in Europe where it seems you can travel and camp even on some private property. Can anyone with more experience or who lives there expand on these laws?

We have Everyman's Right or Right to Roam.

That is the site of the Finnish ministry of forestry in English regarding this.

In practice it means you stay away from settlements or ask permission and you can pick berries, mushrooms, hike, camp and enjoy the nature everywhere. There are also plenty of huts with fireplaces and wood supplies for people to use and often with toilets.

OP here. Thanks for that information.

I'm also interested in bikepacking, and I see a lot of write-ups and videos about people's trips to countries like Peru and Mongolia (just to name a couple) and it seems like they just go wherever they want.

You’re certainly welcome to ask for permission if you want to pitch a tent on my land and odds are good I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Come uninvited and risk getting ventilated.

Yeah, you can go pretty much everywhere outside residential zones
If you encounter a fence that is about waist high is legally considered an "animal barricade" and you can go over it.
Yes even farmlands, just dont do any damage while going through it (dont pick shit, follow established that the farmer uses and dont go over his crops)
All registered trails (place is pretty mountainous so there are instances that a trail route on foot is less-same time than road route on car) are considered public and you cant block them if they go through your property.
You can camp pretty much everywhere but only from dusk till dawn or you are going to get a fine

I'm from Slovenia and I could only find information about forests because we have a special forest law. Forests are a common good so anyone can walk in a forest, hunters are allowed to hunt in the forest in the area where their hunting organisation is authorised to work and you're allowed to pick any mushrooms, berries and other stuff from the woods, but there's a weight maximum and obviously, it doesn't apply to protected mushrooms and plants.
Now, for other areas, I don't know what law to look for but I can tell you from experience. People gather dandelion in the meadows and nobody will stop them, but there is the matter of not walking over cultivated fields or in high grass because that could obviously damage the produce or trample the grass the farmers use for hay. When people set up electric fences on meadows, it's really no big deal to step over one and continue on your way.
For camping, I really can't say because I've only done it once as part of a high school trip at a campsite. I guess you could get away with camping in the wild as long as nobody saw you.

If hikers in America weren't so fucking awful then I'd probably have no issue letting people across across any land I might have but I'm not really interested in getting a part-time job picking up litter or having a rut worn through my backyard because it's a shortcut to something in a national forest and if I didn't reserve the right to control access then that would be unacceptable. I'd love to be able to hike cross-country without worrying that I'm going to get in trouble for being on someone's grazing lease.

I'd try and always stay at least far enough from houses that I couldn't see them, if it came down to I had to cut closer I'd walk confidently out in the open, not slinking down and hiding because I didn't want them to think I was gonna rob them and end up shot. Had a handful of run-ins with people and in general I'd just say I went for a walk and got out further than I expected and got lost so I was just trying to find my way back. It worked best when I wasn't carrying a lot of gear, though I'd usually just go with a small backpack with like food and water for the day, 2 lighters, a flashlight and depending on the weather maybe an extra jacket and socks. When I was really young people cared a lot less. Once I hit like 17 I'd occasionally get questioned a little bit more but the worse I ever got was a dude kind of threatened me saying it'd be in my best interest not to show up again, but I'm pretty sure he was either growing pot, making meth or something (just based off his appearance and the type of people that lived in the area I was walking in.
I think as long as you're respectful of not getting too close to people's houses, don't touch any of their shit (like don't even stop to look at things they may have lying around), look reasonably put together and aren't carrying tons of gear you'll be fine 99% of the time. Might be a difference between being a teen/ 20-something year old and being like 40 in how they treat you though. I'm only 23 so I couldn't say for sure.

The "fellow hikers" in northern Europe were by far more destructive and ruder than anywhere else. Shitting in the middle of the trail without a cathole, dumping trash wherever, intentionally and maliciously breaking stuff in premade campsites and hostels, raiding private gardens when we passed near them, and just generally acting like niggers (despite being white upper-middleclass people)

depending on where you are in the US it can take up 3-4 generations of living in the same area to become welcomed in the community if your not a piece of shit. usually small towns.

ask for permission, trespassing signs have to have a number to call. if its not filled out, ignore it its not legal. if the landowner hasn't been burnt by people in the past by them trashing the place they might allow you access and give written permission and tell you the times to stay out, usually around hunting season. my area you can be arrested even if your caught on valid no trespassing land by LEO's if you don't prove you have permission.

You can stay on any property, but not within 150m (thats 5905 inches for you ameritards) of a house, and on a private propery you may only stay for two nights. Of course, leave no trace, have respect for nature etc etc.
