This. Cattle stations in the Australian outback do this all the time to keep feral camels, donkeys and horse numbers down.

In New Zealand in the 70s and 80s they did this for deer, and turned it into a major export industry. See this documentary:

Equines originally came from North America though. They crossed over to Eurasia about the same time humans came to NA.

Then all the ones in NA died out for reasons, and the rest is history.

I worked at a wildlife refuge and we had really good success with fencing off the refuge, sterilizing all the horses inside the fence, and then letting them die out naturally.

They'll never be perfect, but yes.

They're still domesticated at heart, and a lot of these "wild" horses have a fair amount of interaction with humans over the course of their lives.

Yeah I figured they're still technically domestic horses, but it's tough to get animals truly trained if they weren't raised by humans from birth.

These cats in my garage are kinda like that. They don't run away like wild animals because they are used to people, but you still can't pet them or pick them up and have them trust you like I can do to the indoor cat.

I did have to pop one before. This super aggressive cunt came around and scared off my regular nice cat. Tried to stomp after him and scare him off but he kept coming back. So I had to take the little Crosman and give it 3 pumps just to sting a little. Haven't seen him again.

If he ever comes back, he's getting the Gamo.
