While completely obsolete compared to modern gear, 57A's are good enough to be useful for /out/ activities and cheap enough to be worth getting just to play around with.
Also, there are versions like the ns-71, which have a battery pack and attached IR lamp.

My main problem with cheap and older nvg's is the complete and total lack of depth perception. Its an extremely weird feeling to not be able to tell if there is a 10 foot ditch in front of you, or a 3 foot high wall/rock in front of you
