You arent going to dull the edge of a knife digging in the dirt. That said 1095 steel in a $300 knife is retarded even if they meant to go with the whole "just rub it on a flat rock to sharpen in the wilderness" angle. $30 dollar Buck knives are made from better knife metal that will hold an edge better. The fact TOPS added a zero to the end and used cheaper weaker steel is insulting

Maybe you just dont understand it? Steel is second only to design when choosing a knife but even great design is worthless when the knife wont hold an edge after cutting through paracord or when the blade cracks the first time you smack it

Your argument is stupid. Cost of manufacturing is not limited to the cost of raw materials.

A 72" Long, 1 1/2" Wide, and 3/16" Thick FlatBar of HotRolled 1095 is $25. (Wholesale prices)

A bar of CPM3V of the same dimensions is $110.

So 3V is roughly four times the price of 1095.

The difference in price of the steel amounts to roughly $10 per blade, assuming the knife is 10" overall.

If you're paying $300 you should be getting better quality materials that have better edge retention and more premium features, if steel isn't expensive like you said there's no excuse for it. Obviously design is the most important part but materials comes second like other said.

Heat treatment and blade geometry are much more important than the steel itself.

It doesn't matter if you have the latest and greatest super steel if it's hardened less than a butter knife and is shaped like a club.
