I'm going to be living in the desert in southern Colorado for a few months. I'll be staying in a tent and am wondering what best precautions I can take to be comfy at night.

My current sleeping bag is only rated for 30-40 degrees. How should I layer up to deal with zero temps?

Should I get a cot or a sleeping bag, and should I throw a tarp under my tent? Will that insulate me? Budget hacks appreciated.

Theres already a thread for questions that dont deserve their own thread.
Even the other threads on this board have replies that are directly related to the question op proposed. If you want to spoonfeed someone so inept they cant even google properly, be our guest. Op can find the answers hes seeking on his own if hes an /out/ist.

If your sleeping bag is not rated for the temperatures, get an old blanket and turn it into another layer. You don't need to be an experienced tailor, just grab a needle and thread. Alternatively you could just buy a better rated sleeping bag. I like using a layering system, that way if I wake up sweating I can just yank the outside layer off in a few seconds and go back to sleep.

Ex- south colorado dweller here. You'll need a big blanket and a big tarp, and lots of water. You're definitely not going to freeze to death but it can get to a nice temperature at night, usually like 40 or 50 degrees.

Not him but I've seen plenty of actual -40F nights in CO before. Depends where you're at, but 0 to -20 is fairly normal in the mountains, and nights that freeze the tears in your eyes come along a couple times a year.

hmmm, thinking about it more I guess you can get conditions that are super cold for weeks at a time lowering the cold point.

5k meter + Mountain tops are very subject to wild temp changes but are rarely stable in super cold conditions.

I live at 3k meters and we usually get a cold snap or two every February where the temp goes below -30F for a few days at a time. The nights during that time often hit -40 or colder, not counting wind chill. I've seen -70F with wind chill included.

Most people in CO will never see temps like that though. And locals sure as fuck don't go camping in that kind of weather.

Id put a tarp under your tent just to protect it from tears and add a moisture barrier. We do get dew just like anywhere else.

You'll want to pitch the tent somewhere that will get morning sun but shade in the afternoon.

I usually use a foam mat underneath my sleeping pad, and then i keep a wool blanket on top of my 20 degree bag. You will probably want a colder one or add more wool blankets.

I cant stress a beanie enough. There is nothing worse than waking up 20 times at night because your ears and nose hurt. Id opt for a scarf of some sort or something to cover your face too.

Also, i usually take a few swigs of whiskey before lights out as well. Make sure youre drinking water too. I always make the mistake of not drinking enough in the high elevation because i dont feel thirsty and i always end up making no sense when i talk to people or try to accomplish simple tasks. Water will also keep you warm along with calories at night.

Get a second sleeping bag at amazon. Pic one with about 300 to 400g/m2 insulation (-10°C), should be about $50 or less. Quality is not important, only EN rating.

Put it over your existing sleeping bag. You have now levelled up my son, sleep tight.

This is a place with ski resorts.
Dont let the desert part fool you.
Its high elevation and cold windy and snowy as fuck.
20 below zero f is common
