Actually outside edition.
Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.
Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Prince Albert, Carter Hall or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $20.
Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try filling your pipe this way:

>>1114581 Hi guys. I'm looking for some advice. I'd like to get into tobacco pipes as something to add to my outdoor activities. What sort of questions should I ask when I'm looking at stuff? What should I look for in a pipe and in the tobacco? I smoke weed almost everyday, so tobacco tastes like shit to me. Taste and harshness are important. I really like long Sherlock looking pipes, but I don't know if that's something I should start with or not.
And before no weed allowed. I know, it was relevant though.

>>1114615 Churchwardens are nice for feeling like a wizard. Missouri Meerschaum makes corn-cob churchwarden pipes, so you could get one of those for pretty cheap.
As for tobacco, I'd reccomend getting a tin of one of McClellan's Frog Morton blends, either standard or cellar. I personally like cellar, its sweet and has a good taste to it.
I'd avoid aromatics if you're looking for taste actually, as those don't taste nearly as good as they smell, but they're an easy smoke.
Anonymous
>>1114615 >what sort of questions should I ask? Well, you're pretty much on the right track.
>what should I look for in a pipe? First. Do you like the LOOK of it.
Second. Pick it up, hold it, do everything you would smoking it (other than putting it in your mouth unless expressly allowed). Do you like the FEEL of it?
Third. Can you afford it?
If you like the look of the Sherlock esque pipes, go for it. There really isn't a "beginner's style" as it's strictly personal preference. That being said, there are some MATERIALS that are more noob friendly than others.
If you need a mild tobacco with a good smell I would suggest the cheaper aromatics. Things like Captain Black Royal, which you can get at many gas stations and walmart. Another good one would be Half and Half, which is unflavored but quite mild.
Anonymous
>>1114618 Thank you. I do want to want to feel like a wizard. The way you describe the cellar sounds good.
>>1114620 What materials are noob friendly? Also, do you guys think it would be a pain to float around in my kayak while puffing on a pipe? This is actually what made me want to get a pipe. There's something about tobacco that pulls you into the present. I think it'll be nice adding that to kayaking.
And I appreciate the answers, guys. I browsed/fit/ for years and recently realized/out/ is superior.
Anonymous
>>1114626 If you take it slow in a kayak, I can imagine that being a great time. It would definitely be something I'd do only when at rest during the kayak, as I feeling like paddling while trying to hold a large churchwarden in my mouth wouldn't be easy.
What that anon meant by materials, I'm guessing, is that corn-cob pipe, a cheap tamper, and a bic lighter/matches are good for starting out. Don't worry about getting any fancy briar until you've fully adopted the hobby.
Anonymous
>>1114633 Cool picture. I usually tire myself out racing to either the middle of the lake, or a channel before floating and taking everything in. I'm gonna go to a local tobacco place a half our away and bring up the advice I got from here, and go from there. I'm excited :)

Few questions for you guys:>Is there a consistent "tin" size of pipe tobacco the way liquor is (nearly) always in fifths? >If so, how many times can I pack a normal-sized pipe from that typical tin? >How long will a tin keep? I'd like to have a pipe around for the V E R Y occasional bowl. >If I had a $50 budget for an unused pipe, what companies should I look at? What about $100?
Anonymous
>>1114723 Most tins are 100g. Most pouch tobacco is 1.5oz. There are outliers.
Depends on too many factors to give even a rough range.
Undamaged tins are airtight and will keep basically forever. If you're hard on the tins, paranoid, or end up with pouch tobacco, a $2 mason jar is also airtight and will keep tobacco indefinitely.

>>1114725 Ah, if it'll keep indefinitely then my second question becomes irrelevant. So if I smoke tobacco a year after I buy it, it's not going to be "stale" or something? Great.

I read something about kretek cigarettes and decided to try making something similar in a pipe. Its just cloves and tobacco, I mixed about 50/50, but you could do more or less. I really liked the taste and smell, but it was sweet, so if you don't like that avoid it. The way the clove crackles as you smoke is very satisfying, reminds me of sitting around the campfire growing up before I moved to the city, and the smoke was very thick and hung heavy in the air. the biggest downside I found was that the clove oil really does its job and makes your mouth a little numb after a while, might be best for short smokes like from a mini pipe

Lots of non-briar woods have been used to make pipes and stems-cherry, pear, maple, manzanita, sumac, Mountain Laurel, oak and even pine. As long as the prep is done, the wood won’t taint the flavor of what you’re trying to smoke.
Make sure it is DRY first-warping is not your friend. Then boil the wood to get out all of the saps and shit, then dry, boil the wood again, then dry again.

When you tamp, don’t apply any more pressure than it takes to get the ember back in contact with the unburnt tobacco. When I know my pipe is packed pretty tight, i’ll just use my tamper like a broom, not applying any more downward pressure, but just pushing the ash out of the way of the ember.
Anonymous
Quoted By:
>>1119580 You must not be getting the pack right. I usually smoke about 2/3 of the bowl before needing to touch it at all.
Start with a fill and pack it with moderate pressure. That should leave you with 1/3-1/2 of the bowl packed. Top it back up and pack with more pressure. Repeat if necessary to fill the entire bowl. Give it a test draw. It should be just slightly restricted over an empty pipe.
Give it a charing light and make sure to draw deep and move the lighter in circles to get everything. Smoke till it goes out (won't be long), tamp it flat, and then light it. Again, remember to draw deep and light the entire surface.
Using this method I typically don't have to do anything other than occasionally knock out some ash for most of the smoke. I've never been able to burn all the way down without a relight though.

Burley leaves don't have the natural sugars Virginias do, and since thats the main component of tobaccos flavor profile, theyre naturally very mild with no tongue bite.
But also because of that, it doesnt smell like tobacco so much as something else. Socks is apt, as Ive also heard it described as musty. Nothings wrong with it and its still ok to smoke, thats just how Burley smells.

Curing in particular is crucial to setting the final flavor of the tobacco. What you are calling real tobacco is probably flue-cured Virginia, the most common variety used in cigarettes. But there are a lot of other methods out there that make tobacco taste different than what youre used to.

>Tobaccos A lot will recommend Frog Morton but also consider other brands. I suggest looking online for best selection. Do you want to try an all natural tobacco, or do you want it to be flavored like something?
In pic related, the left side are English and Balkan blends. Smokey, full flavor, even spicey. Think camp fire, incense, roasted meat.
In the middle are two aromatics which are lightly flavored (haven't tried them yet) and frog morton cellar, which has a 'top note' of whiskey and is otherwise very smooth and easy to smoke but some don't like it.
On the right are two pressed Virginia tobaccos. These are good, smooth, mellow smokes. The dunhill flake is somewhat sweet, almost like cream, but also has a nutty toasty profile. The navy rolls have a spicier tobacco, perique, added for flavor.
Most people I don't think like the Balkan or full English tobaccos, but I took to them immediately.

I don't see any mention of estate pipes here... Best way to get yourself an incredibly nice pipe that you could never afford otherwise is to buy an estate pipe online or in an antique shop (If you can find one there. They're rare.) Some of them have hardly been smoked, but you can tell pretty well by looking for wear around the mouthpiece. Also, Mario Grande makes amazing brand new Italian pipes, sells them on ebay and elsewhere. He's an artist by anyone's definition, but the pipe market is so clenched by older makers that he has to sell his cheap to make his name. Around fifty bucks for an amazing work of art. >>1122811 The cob is very easy to smoke with a lot of margin for error in technique since it absorbs moisture well. It's also cheap.
Go with the cheap cob, smoke ten or twenty bowls, then decide what you want to add as your next pipe; within a year I have three briars, a cob churchwarden, and two estate briars awaiting restoration. But I fretted way too much over that first briar pipe. You'll have a better idea what you really want next after getting a few smokes in. After that, either get one of those basket briars, maybe a different cob; or you might decide you want a churchwarden or a nice freehand. You might not like it at all and decide to move on.
Either way the cob is a win, and you'll always have it on hand to try new tobaccos or to use for aromatics instead of a pricier briar pipe. I would never put an aromatic in my estate peterson or my Baraccini, for instance.

>>1119915 Well, update on my nose. It's stopped hurting but it still feels stuffy for a lack of better work. I can smell somethings but it's like listening to a song and only hearing the drum beat, certain things are missing. I was really missing my pipe so I took my smallest one and loaded it up with my usual tobacco (JF Germain's King Charles Mixture) and I'm smoking it right now. The initial taste was weak but similar (although missing a few elements) while the smell was again weak, but more complete. Both have now faded and now I can taste toast and grass in the smoke. It's interesting however to see how the flavour of tobacco is such a multilayered thing, and how stripping a few elements out of it can spoil the experience.
I really hope this ends soon. The thought of never being able to enjoy tobacco again is very depressing.

If you get more in to really nice, expensive pipes or just wind up loving them heavily, there are specialty products from Decatur and maybe other companies for cleaning and polishing each component. I'll get a couple of these eventually for a couple of restoration projects I bought, but for now if I clean a pipe it's with alcohol.
Anonymous
>>1126686 Also, after cleaning you might notice chew marks on your stem left over. If you look online you can find little rubber guards to go over the mouthpiece to prevent this. If you look at Madsen's pics in these threads, he uses them. I need to order some myself because I already have visible teeth marks on my two most smoked pipes. It's worth while to protect your pipe even if it's just a cheap cob since you'll have already broken it in and built up a cake.

>>1127272 You pull it into your mouth, and hold it, then either push it out your nose or mouth. The mucous membranes in that part of your body will absorb the nicotine. You don't inhale it into your lungs. The only people that can do that without getting sick are people who regularly smoke cigarettes.

About to head to the tobacconist to buy my first pipe and some of their house tobacco. I have a budget of about $50 for the pipe itself. Are there good pipes around that amount? Should I try to get briar? Any brands I should look for?
Anonymous
>>1127524 Sorry buddy I'm pretty new, but it's better than no one responding before you go
Any of the pipes there will probably treat you great, I haven't yet seen a cheapo crappy pipe. But don't get something with an extraordinarily deep bowl like the Missouri Meerschaum macarthur, because it'll be hard to relight
Anonymous
>>1126756 What pipe is that? Seems tiny.
Anonymous
>>1127524 $50 is about the starting point for good briar pipes but don't worry about that just yet. Get a basket briar pipe or a cob. Cobs are extremely easy to smoke and the smooth finished ones are aesthetic.
But if you see a wessex pipe, that's an alright starter brand you can find for 30 ish iirc
Anonymous
>>1127524 For $50 you're looking at very entry level briars and I would encourage you to get a cob or hardwood that you like the look/feel of. Cobs smoke better than briars anyway (IMO hardwoods are the worst-smoking pipes but they're cheap af and look good).
Savinelli is a very well respected, older, briar pipe brand (I have one of their churchwardens and it's a dream to smoke), they occasionally have seconds in the $35-50 range that are just minor cosmetic defects. On a rusticated (textured side) pipe you'll never find these defects and they're good smokers.
Anonymous
>>1127533 It's a Wessex, very first pipe I bought. Got from Pipes and Cigars as part of a starter bundle.
It's not huge but it's not like a nose warmer or anything. I just have big hands.
They're not built great, mine has a tiny bend and several fills. But for their price point they're a good way to try briar and they smoke decent enough to expand your rotation on a budget. Gurgles less than my pricier Baraccini really.

>>1127524 >>1127535 >>1127534 >>1127531 Thanks for the advice, I saw all your posts before going in. I ended up getting this little Vuillard, 2 sample pouches, and the necessary gear for $50. It was a great experience. He spent 45 minutes handing me dozens of pipes, going over what kinds of flaws to look for, letting me compare the feel of biting vulcanite and acrylic stems, wafting their various house blends at me, etc. I smoked a bowl in the store and left with an aromatic and an english blend, about 10-15 bowls' worth of each. Looking forward to going innawoods with it all this weekend. How'd I do?

Still nothing. I'm hoping it'll clear up in the next two weeks or so. Might go ask my doctor for some mild steroids as those can work according to someone I know who went through a similar thing. The annoying thing is that I can taste and smell a lot of things right now, but not tobacco (and a few other things that I really enjoy).

>>1127543 I wouldn’t sweat the aesthetics too much on a super cheap basket pipe.
The really nice, zero-fills-grade briars start at about $80. With briars at $35 or below, fills and flaws are just going to be there, especially if you get a cheap pipe with a smooth finish.
I have a smooth finished Big Bill brand pipe that I found, unsmoked, for $1. It has at least 13 fills that I can see on the outside, and up to four more inside the bowl, so the wood grade is somewhere just above sawdust-tier. But it smokes like a champ, absolutely great.
So now it’s a going /out/ knockabout pipe.
>>1127578 You did well, and your tobacconist did even better.
10/10 experience, would go out of my way to patronize him myself.

I just went to a tobacco shop and they didn't really have much of a selection or know anything about any of the pipe tobacco they had. They told me one was "regular" pipe tobacco so I figured I would try it. It's called gambler. It tasted like ass. Just as bad as any cigar I've tried. Whenever I smell someone smoking a pipe it always smells sweet and delicious, not like what I just tried. What do I buy if I want something that doesn't taste like ass?

>>1128044 That almost looks more like RYO cigarette tobacco masquerading as pipe tobacco to dodge taxes than real pipe tobacco. I know most places have captain black, and thats been reasonable for cheapo drugstore tobacco.
Also, no matter what, pipes always smell better than they taste. If you smoke slow enough it will generally be more mild than a cigar, but the smells coming out of the bowl for the people around you aren't necessarily a reflection of how it tastes.

>>1128044 I draw a definite line between a tobacco shop and a tobacconist. Locally I only have a 'tobacco shop'; they sell RYO crap, cigarettes and maybe a cigar selection. Pipes are an after thought.
Find something marketed more as a cigar shop. There you will find a good cigar selection and usually, at least a bit of a pipe section.
For me I pretty much have to shop online.

>>1128044 What kind of tobacco do you want to try? There's different types of pipe tobacco sorted out into various blend types depending on style and composition. Straight tobaccos, straight vigrinia, burley, etc, English blends, virginia mixed with orientals, cypriot, latakia, etc, Virginia-Perique blends, aromatic blends which are flavoured, continental European blends, etc.
I recommend English and Virginia tobaccos to newcomers (and English are my favourite blends myself). Something like a Dunhill Standard or Squadron Leader is a great beginner tobacco for English blends.
Anonymous
>>1128843 Hi five for English blends, bro.
But in my opinion Dunhill Early morning pipe will be better for beginners as English-type mixture, because Standard mixture and Squadron Leader may be very strong.

>>1129284 I have to say when I first started smoking, I did feel a bit unwell after smoking more than one bowl of tobacco. In fact the second time I smoked my pipe, I ended up vomiting.
Now it's fine and while I can still get a bad nic hit every now and again, it's very rare and usually when I'm puffing far too quickly at some black twist.
So perhaps go with EMP, or don't be an idiot like me and try to smoke three bowls in a row right off the bat.

>>1128044 Try some OTC stuff to get a baseline of what you might like. As another anon said, Captain Black is a must try for any pipe smoker. Personally, I hate the stuff but I will smoke 1Q a few times a week. I've been smoking pipes for about 10 years now, and smoke Half & Half almost exclusively after trying just about everything out there. Other people detest that stuff, while I burn 6+ bowls per day of it. The point is, you just have to find what suits you. Last I checked there were over 7000 blends of pipe tobacco on the market.

I've been noticing a subtle sourness to my english blend and i want that to be magnified. it's not the sour pipe flavor, but a genuinely nice tang that pervades every puff. are there english blends that amplify this flavor? From what I've heard so far that it could be the orientals that are doing the trick, though not all orientals are the same. i'm at a loss, as there is not much out there on this subject as people tend towards sweeter flavors.
Anonymous
>>1129473 Sounds like you're getting a little bit of either latakia or perique in it. Latakia is just straight up strong, and some batches have a sour note. Perique is fermented and as such lends a hint of sourness to it.
The other possibility is it was a cheap blend that had some variety of cased (flavored) tobacco that introduced it.
I would look for a perique heavy blend if you liked it.
Anonymous
>>1129513 I actually have an ounce of mixing perique and i definitely don't get it from that. it's something else. I appreciate the help. It's definitely a subtler taste than this perique, definitely on the same palate note as a virginia, only sour. perique i find has a spicy, dry flavor to it. i've even tried to hydrate out that dryness to no avail.
i guess i'll have to grab a few more mixing tobaccos to really identify this. i think it may be an undercurrent of a bright oriental.
