my kit keeps me comfortable till about 0c and then from -5 and below it's pretty miserable. but that is fine for like 5- 6 months of the year

it gets to -35c here regularly during winter

what do I need to get /out/ during the the 6 months?

You need extremes.
Fjallraven for example has a sleeping bag which should handle -30 temps, only it costs 10k swedebux, or just over 1200 dollarydoos.
You can always build an igloo or something but I would always recommend having another a safer solution.

From what the guys over me said about sleeping bags: If you reckon -35 as an extreme lower temperature of what you'll be sleeping outside in, you can probably get away with a sleeping bag with a T-LIM rating of -30, along with a silk liner (inexpensive), provided that you wear baselayers whilst sleeping and use one of your warmer layers as a blanket.

Also, use your burner to heat up your tent. Just make sure that you light it outside so your tent doesn't burn up. (If your burner doesn't burn blue however this could kill you, so make sure you're comfortable with it)

Canadian tire has a sale on their -40 sleeping bags right now. Not really lightweight, but you really don't want to fuck around during alberta winters, and if you had the price range for light winter gear you wouldn't be asking here

alberta here too, also infantry done lots of winter warfare

we use 5 or 10 man arctic tents with vent holes so you can run a coleman stove/lantern inside and it gets nice and warm, keep your gear outside the tent so it stays dry, if you bring cold gear in the tent it attracts condesation

insulation from the ground is just as important as the bag for sleeping, use evergreen boughs under an air mattress for max comfy

half the battle is learning how to keep dry and dry the gear that gets wet, ie two pairs of mukluk liners, gloves, touques etc to cycle as one pair dries etc

To add to the tip on drying clothes - if you were to get wet when /out/ wintertime, don't change clothes until you set up camp. You'll want to save your dry clothing for sleeping. If your wet clothes aren't dry again by morning, put the wet ones back on - they will dry from your body heat when hiking. (This applies if you're wearing wool, not cotton)

This also goes for socks and gloves, you can put them in your hip-pockets, inner pockets (if you have them on your jacket) and even between your shoulder and baselayer.

To be honest though I hope you already know how this works...

Agreed, hypothermia kills. Need to take winter gear very very seriously. If you can't afford quality down sleeping bag, shelter, stove, proper layers, etc then don't go.

good way to puncture and/or get sap all over your $100 sleeping pad and $300 tent..

nah, we used rubber air mattresses that were very tough, and floorless tents are best for winter, you can put a groundsheet down if you're afraid of getting your gear dirty tho

It's the easiest way to increase your sleeping-comfort during winter, though. I do it regularly, unless you have an ultralight pad it shouldn't be a problem. You could also get a floor-sheet for your tent.
