What is your opinion about homesteading? Does the interest dies down once you are into it and understand you have no free time?

People who get into homesteading do it because they think they will like it. Those who don't like it, move on to something else. Those who do like it keep doing it. It is basically one of those things where your "job" happens to be your "hobby". You keep getting more and more interested in it and research stuff for easy and efficiency or expand on what you are already doing.

My opinion on homesteading is that it is fun and more people should do it not just for the physical & mental health you get but also the buffer it adds to society. More people who grow their own foods and make their own things puts less strain on those things in the local community when there's some disaster, be it bad weather or economic.

Most people that get into it are done with all of that crap. I would rather spend my Saturday mowing my 5 acres of lawn or build a new bat box to hang up down in my forest.
If you would rather go to the movie theater for the latest Hollywood blockbuster instead of picking up a box of skeet clays for your home range, then you shouldn't have started homesteading in the first place.

Good post. Though, do you bag up your grass cuttings and compost them? That's what I do. Otherwise, I'd not have a lawn to mow at all.

Since the dawn of time, I've been collecting deadfall and branches of trees I chopped down on big piles. Every now and then I burn one of them. It basiclally just means I spend a day moving wood from one pile to another to another to set it on fire.

Does anyone have better or more creative ways of dealing with waste wood?

I use smaller stuff for my rocket stove for cooking and larger stuff for hugelkultur. I have regular wood stoves in my houses, but no room to stack up more wood for them. If you get your hands on a 55gallon metal drum you can make charcoal for anything from BBQ to metalcasting and forging. If you have access to a chipper you can make landscaping/garden mulch (wear ear protection.) With the wood I don't have a use for, I merely pile up at the end of the yard and let nature decompose it. It isn't worth my time to burn piles of it. Though, sometimes I have cookouts with food on a stick type events with friends where I use some of the drier newer piles as fuel.

How does one start getting into this? I guess starting with just learning how to grow shit is a good first step. How long does it take to be able to do something like in your pic. I have approximately two years before I purchase land or a foreclosure. Currently living in my fifth wheel with the pup and the gf. We're gonna be living in our fifth wheel six months out of every year for cheap, simple /out/ living. After a couple years we'll either buy land or a house. If we buy a house we'll rent it out and continue this life style until we've saved a decent amount again. I didn't know the term homesteading until I saw this thread, but it's pretty much what I want to end up doing.

Presuming you burn wood for heat, put any of the small stuff in paper bags (like from bread or something like that) and use it as the "starter" when lighting the fire.

Mine are too wet for that. I have a grass catcher and vacuum attachment. Everything gets picked up as it is cut then I can pull a lever and dump it on the compost pile without leaving the mower. I get free straw and hay from a local place. All I need to do is sweep up their trailers to get it. I use that for bedding, mulch, and compost.

We have an anon with a cabin in Alaska with a gorgeous view of mount denali. He spends 6 months out on ship working and then 6 months at his cabin relaxing and hunting caribou. His posts are pretty cool, he has take his snowmobile to meet a seaplane down at an unnamed lake to pickup food and fuel.

That depends on if you want to use compost and/or care about what the lawn looks like. Though, most lawns won't show problems for like 15-20 years if you constantly remove the grass from them. Unless you live in California or similar. Then again, one application of manure and lime dust once every 5-10 years will make a lawn go into overdirve with growth if you are worried about depletion.

Not him, but that is what I do. I've worked in several fast food and restaurants in my time. There's no way in hell I'd eat food from those places knowing what I've seen go on. Now I'm a farmer. I'm a farmer for health and peace of mind. That's priceless. I only wish I had this knowledge and made this type of change back when I was in my teens or even before.

I have a 150 meter rifle range and another acre+ trap/skeet range. Along with the 5 acres of lawn I also have 10 acres of forest. Its great for 4th of July bar b ques, fireworks and easter egg hunts. I doubt you'd want to bring your 5 year old over to look for eggs in an overgrown pasture with rattle snakes. I love being able to just walk around in random directions, without being tangled up in briars.
