Are you currently a Beekeeper, do you have any plans to become one, are you interested, etc

I started recently by joining a club at my university, I've become intrigued by this ancient practice

Also, sharing any files on history/practice/recipes would be greatly appreciated

We've got two hives right now, but on of them is weak, they're both infested with varroa and it looks like they may not survive the winter. We have a few mite killing strips, and someone suggested we combine the hives. What do you think?

It depends on where you live, if you live in a hot area with weak winters I would say just try the wood bleach method and let them try and survive. If you have harsh winters I would still try using wood bleach but I would check up on them everyday and make the decision to combine right before the big tempature drop

A small hive costs 120$ for a package and about 50$ for wood. I made all of my boxes and frames apart from that I spend 20$ a year on wood bleach and about 20$ on sugar to make feeding syrup apart from that it's not that expensive at all. People make it way more expensive than it has to be. I made my own extractor, gloves, suit, hive tool and frames. Also once you get going you can use the wax to make your own foundation.

As for time, I spent maybe an two hours a week doing maintenance and record keeping and that's with ten hives.

If you are diligent enough and help replace queens when need you can keep your hive going for a long time. Thankfully American foul brood doesn't mean I have to burn all of my equipment because my state has a faculty that kills it all for about a 5$ fee and hive check ups are free and paid by the state.

Worked helping establish beekeeping on farms in Africa, Kenya specifically. Was the first time I ever worked with Africanised honey bees, or "killer bees" as they are often called.

The town we were in showed us a hive that apparently killed a kid a month or so before. We ended up getting it down and using it for the first hive.

Wearing a bee suit and dealing with Americanized bees is nerve-racking though. They are hyper aggressive even with smoke.

They seem to be producing rather well. To be honest the farmers we worked with were all relatively well educated compared to most of the population, and already ran decently large farms. The biggest hurdle was not so much the actual beekeeping itself, which is super easy, but the marketing and distribution of the product.

Thankfully most of these guys already had connections for agricultural product and last I checked they sell to rich westerners overseas, and sell some of it locally.

Now, we went in and instructed them on how to do everything, and they picked it up super quick. We did provide one suit for free and built the first hive, although they have since invested in more and been able to build more hives so they obviously learned how to do it.

What are some things you wished you'd known when you started out? As far as you know (even if it's just hearsay) which states are friendly to beekeepers, and which seem extremely hostile?

You can get an allergy test at any clinic, but it's far more cost effective to just get stung.

I got stung for the first time just a couple weeks ago, and I can tell you that if you're not allergic it's really not that bad. It fucking burns for half an hour, but honestly it's not bad enough for me to abandon my bees.

I will say that there is a step between "allergic" and "not allergic" for bee stings. Some people have extreme reactions to stings without having a proper allergy, they get stung and the venom causes several week long reactions that negatively affect the body, but does not cause anaphylaxis. My wife reacts badly to any kind of sting (even sweat bees put her out for a week), so I've seen this effect firsthand.
