as far as i know, vendors add seams and grommets for a 1000% markup. a silnylon tarp bought off a roll is like 14 usd for 10x10, then 100+ for hemming and grommets. not to downplay the importance of those items, but dagnarn

OP here, I decided to order the DD a few days ago, will post when it arrives. Decision came down to the tie-out points. DD looked the most solid out of them, and I've heard that silnylon is generally better than poly.

Yeah at least two of the sides of those shelters are folded over so offer no ventilation. Looks like an absolute sweat box.

Who cares, the thing is like a massive sail. Would be away better to set up some sort of low half pyramid instead of this retarded thing. Something like this would be better in every way.

Nah, gotta have a closed-off floor. You don't need ventilation unless you've brought winter gear out-of-season. Having ome side open and no vestibule allows for decent airflow, anyways.

Why? A sheet of tyvek or polycro will do the job. Plus you can move your ground sheet around allowing you to cook under you tarp

In all seriousness though, buy a cheap sewing machine (I got a pretty nice but older Singer from Goodwill for $8, it worked as-is, then spent like an additional $15 at Jo-Ann for some spare needles and some good thread). Learn to sew, it's really actually easy and there's a TON of resources available on the web, including jewtube.

You're 100% correct about the cost of the fabric, buy it from somewhere like Ripstop by the Roll or MYG.

You should not actually use grommets, they significantly weaken the fabric. Use grosgrain loops and put a small patch of scrap material under them so you're sewing through a double-thick section. Seal the seams. Wham, completed tarp for under $20 and about an hour of work, that's better *and* lighter than any of the cheapshit """bushcraft""" tarps on amazon. Hell you could make an 8x10' DCF tarp for what a good silnylon or silpoly tarp would cost you from a "reputable" company (roughly $100-120).

So far I've made an 8x10 and a 12x12 tarp and an 11' cat tarp (MEMBRANE silpoly, sub-1oz/yd) as well as my own gathered-end hammock (1oz/yd Robic nylon). None of them took longer than an hour (I think I had about 20 minutes sunk into the hammock).
