Depends on the severity of the conditions/topology but Ive done winter hiking in 3-season boots, B0 crampons and a second-hand axe. Together thatll set you back less than $200.

I got wool blankets specifically so we could sleep in the nude. Though, a knit cap while sleeping is a must. I like it cold enough to see your breath while sleeping.

beyond the obvious(jacket, boots, toque, gloves) id say a pocket warmer. The chemical ones(that you just snap and they go to 40C, and then can be re-armed by boiling) or the fuel(zippo) are fine.

Course if your "winter" is just -5C, than STFU and wear a hoodie. I'm in the midwest Canada so i get to look forward to -40C, so iv got my shit already out of storage. Expecting to use it around end of november.

where Im from we got ass blasted by the winter last year, and this year its already shaping up to be as bad if not worse than last year. we went entire weeks with sub zero temps (winter low of -56F), building collapsed under the weight of snow, and 6 inch ice dams needing removed every several days to stop roof leaking.

I am in the market for some serious business gloves and I'm willing to shell out 100-200 dollars for them.

What should I be looking at? I dont snowboard or ski or anything like that so Im not really in the know when it comes to winter rec gear
