I've really wanted to get into hunting and fishing. I one day wanted to have my own homestead with small livestock and some crops.

The problem however is that I have a strong aversion to killing animals. How can I overcome this? I want to be able to procure and prepare my own food. The thought of causing pain and taking the life are difficult for me to deal with. Have any of you dealt with this or known anyone who successfully got past something similar?

It might help to realize that you are doing it to survive / provide sustenance rather than out of malevolence. That your ancestors have done it for hundreds of thousands of years and the fact that you are now paying someone to do it for you doesn't make any difference.

For me, that would be the most important argument. I love animals but if I had to kill one for sustenance, I would do it without hesitation or remorse. Well, mostly.

Also it might be a good idea to start with fishing/ gutting/ eating some fish.

You're fighting a lifetime worth of cultural programming. It's the hypocrisy of nominally wanting to cause no suffering, yet also wanting meat put in front of you. It's good that you realize the two aren't compatible (some try to ignore or rationalize their way around this conflict). Now consider that killing and/or being killed comprise the natural, and in fact the only possible state of ecology. Read some Aldo Leopold. Also read about what you can do to reduce the suffering of animals you take. Fishing is a good start.

Watch what predators do to prey in the wild. Their kills are NOT clean. Sometimes the prey is literally eaten alive. Sometimes it just has to walk around disemboweled until it dies. When humans kill shit, it's mostly an instant or semi-instant death.

Don't eat for a couple of days.
Go fishing.
You'll chop that fucker up without hesitation.
Get used to murdering fish, and then you can move on to birds.
If you really hate killing anything that walks on land, you don't really have to. Your primary sources of animal protein on a private homestead are going to be milk and eggs, anyway. That being said your hesitation will vanish when you get hungry enough and you haven't caught a fish.

Prey animals don't die of old age, either they're wild and get torn to shreds by far more vicious hunters than us, or we raise them as livestock and, in commercial cases, they have absolutely miserable lives. I'd take solace in the fact that you've given the animal the safest, happiest and most secure life that you can and when it came time to end it, that you did so as quickly and painlessly as you could. Home-raised lifestock has by far the best lives of any (non-pet) animal.

All the theory makes sense in my head, it's just the go time part where one hand is on a living creature, my other hand is holding a knife and everything inside me is screaming that this is fucked up and I'm paralyzed.

I reckon exposure is the only way I'll get through it, fishing on my own or hunting with friends seems like the best way to acclimate myself to killing something.

Go fishing first and kill some. I usually rip the gills out. As far as hunting, there will always be some remorse to killing a large animal, but you get used to it over time. I cried when I shot my first deer and it still makes me upset when i don't make a clean kill, but it has gotten easier over time.

Yeah, you'll get over it when you steel yourself and kill something the first couple of times. Have the right equipment and be confident in your skill so you can make it a quick, clean kill. Respect the animal and be thankful for the sustenance it's providing.
