Ultralighters pay more for less. That's all well-and-good if you have money to burn, but most people don't, so they're rightly incensed at the sight of someone paying more for less. Ultralighters also make a lot of illogical concessions from a "survival" standpoint. Namely, the use of plastic vessels and utensils, in addition to impractical stove setups.
I'm of the opinion that one can achieve similar baseweights for a fraction of the price by thinking outside the box, and ommitting luxuries like dedicated tents, composite trekking poles, hydration bladders and specially-made packs, in favor of a shower curtain and a hammock with adjustable straps, Or a single wooden pole, cheap 10'x10' tarp, small webbing straps, and a trashbag.
Either combination frees-up weight for a steel mess kit and a multitool. The tricky part is rigging-up the carrying straps.
