Fear of Heights

I want to start climbing munros here in scotland but some of them have terrifying ridgewalks/pinnacle scrambles. I am scared of heights. I just wouldn't be able to do it. My legs would be jelly.
How do i overcome my fear?

Not really. You just get needed to get higher to get scared. I start working as a tree surgeon about 3 years ago. Over those three years my idea of a tall tree has changed a lot. I still get nervous once I step out of comfort zone but in a year my comfort zone will have adjusted. Just take it slow, push yourself sensibly and take calculated risks. You'll soon learn whether your desire to climb the Munros is stronger than your desire to stay in your comfort zone.

Don't start out with the Munros if you are scared of the hieghts. There are plenty of great sub Munros like the Clisham

several of the munros are fine for people with a fear of heights, i think.
i don't have acrophobia. i can go to the top floor of buildings etc no problem.
i just can't be near the edge, in an exposed place.

truth. i rock climb and mountain climb and i'm terrified of heights and have terrible vertigo. but that's part of the reason i do it, to challenge myself mentally.

This. Start easy and then work from there, you'll see progress in months. I'm usually a bit stiff in the spring, till the end of summer it's a whole different story.
Climb the same mountain /munro once each year and you'll see how much progress you've made.

I get nervous near 'the edge' too. For me it's a fear that I will slip and a lack of confidence in the gear. It really is just an exposure therapy thing, you just have to start with mildly uncomfortable low risk spots.

Just sit there and have tea maybe, or take a rock climbing class. I did that for same reason as anon above, to get over it and because I want to be a mountaineer.

You can do it anon, this is me about 60 feet up on what was a really hard route for me after already falling once.

My fear stems a lot from a lack of confidence in my ability, and lack of trust in my gear. So I challenge both. What do you visualize disasters as? You slipping, losing balance, or rock collapsing under you? That can tell you a lot about where your fear comes from.

When the fear overcome my will, I start to lose balance, my legs go stiff so I actually might fall because I fear of falling... It's a mind game that you win whin focus and practice.

Yup.

Step 0, obtain proper equipment.
Step 1, learn how to use the equipment properly (and maintain/inspect said equipment).
Step 2, trust your equipment.

is that Helvellyn? that brings back some horrible memories from when I climbed it (I'm terrified of heights as well, only agreed to climb it because I wanted to take some cool photos at the top)

which is weird because i love my life and im actually very happy but whenever i stand too close to the edge my body feels like it wants to throw me off.

Lots of exposed spots on that mountain.
And most people climb it without gear. Here in the UK we refer to this as scrambling. It's considered a grade 3 scramble. Or where hillwalking meets climbing.
The climbing isn't very difficult but the consequences are almost certain death if you fuck up.
Several of the mountains/munros in Scotland are like this. and are traditionally completed without any gear.
People who wish to rock climb with gear usually take even more complex routes where ropes are a necessity- More difficult but less dangerous because obviously your are roped up.

Honestly, I climbed so little this year after taking the class that I still suck ass at it. There's regular group climbs I could go to from the organization that put on the class, but other obligations and my social anxiety resulted in me not going to a single one.

One of the girls who took the class with me did her first lead climb and multi pitch by August. All in all its been a really disappointing /out/ year, but I'm going to get back at it next Spring and will spend winter snow shoeing and conditioning, hopefully a winter overnighter or two.

Anyway, yeah, would not mind leading someday but as it stands I've absolutely no business doing it and frankly nobody to do it with.

don't feel bad. i've hardly been climbing at all over the last 2 years (18 of those months with a fucked up shoulder) and i've gone from leading .11s to bailing off a 5.8. fuckin head game's gone, man. (though to be fair it was a 35' run out with a potential ledge fall with rope stretch, so i don't fell too bad about it.)

I'm feeling better about it now than I was. One of my work buddies pointed out that I had a pretty full plate this year and I had to admit he was right.

My shoulder is F'd right now too but improving. Starting physical therapy soon and an orthopedist in November if it doesn't improve. Kind of a recurring issue I've had over the last 10ish years but now it's worse and impeding rom. Ugh.
