how often do you use your compas? ive only ever used them for orienteering and stuff, never actually while hiking.

With my GPS, quite often.
GPS knows where it is, and knows where a waypoint is. The internal compass sucks, but it can tell me with a high degree of accuracy a bearing/distance to the waypoint.
So I'll set the heading from the GPS on the compass, red in the shed, and go that way.

This is usually on snowy/overcast days where I tend to lose my sense of direction easier.

Also a quick/easy way to gauge slope aspect.

I don't think I've ever used it for anything other than teaching other people how to use it.

It's an emergency backup to my GPS.

the fucking map and the path signs are useless.

Mostly a just in case tool. you bring a map and compass for if your gps fails.

Fucking useless though if you can't land nav without electronic assistance

I use a mini clip on compass quite often, as I walk with map and compass. Normally this is enough with the terrain features to find my way. About once a year or so I break out the mirror compass when I need an exact bearing.

Use my phone gps and set waypoints. Compass just for safety but i keep a fully charged 20000mah power bank too.

this one's from 1289 but don't expect much, it's moslty barely recognizable stone heaps on a muddy hill.
the whole thing was only a 15m x 40m parallelogram with 2m thicc and 5m high walls.
but the land is like this here, just like in the Shire dotted with dúnedain ruins everywhere.
also the local noble's been declared a local tyrant by the king in 1295 and ordered the fort to be demolished.
in 1326 it was already wrecked.

what GPS do you guys use? is it somehow better than the GPS a phone provides? completely clueless about this subject but rather interested as I'm starting to venture in more recondite non-4G locations, if anyone feels like educating a newfriend a little bit

etrex 20, better battery life, better hardware, more robust, works in a storm with mittens on, solid like a fucking brick.
For most out activities your phone is plenty, just make sure that you got the maps you need on it and maybe a power bank.
I leave my GPS at home most of the time and just walk by map. Dunno why, but it feels more relaxed to me.

Main advantage of a dedicated GPS unit is that it's hard to use a touch screen when it's raining or snowing and your hands are freezing whereas the physical buttons on a GPS can be easily used with gloves or mittens on. You can put your phone in a plastic bag and get conductive gloves to mitigate this but a GPS is just easier to use. Battery life is better too, especially in the cold which kills phone batteries fast. Also my GPS is a lot more waterproof and will survive a drop better than my phone.

I usually just turn it on to mark things occasionally or check where I am on my map, in which case weeks. If you're leaving it on and tracking it's like 15-20 hours of constant use.

60CSx was my first modern receiver after my GPS12. Killed it, bought a 76CSx, killed it. I'm on my 2nd 76Cx now. But the 60CSx took some serious abuse.

I can go a day pretty easily with NiMH rechargeables, in the cold/winter. Summer they'll go 2-3 days.
Powered off my sled, a set of batteries will go about a week.

If it dies or I lose/destroy it, I still have my phone as a backup if needed.

Basically never. I hike into remote areas but always stay at least within sight of trail or waterway. I know how to use it but it's an emergency gear item for me.
