I don't understand anything about fishing, it all seems so complicated. Hunting is understandable - I went outside with my buddy, we looked for a deer, got close enough to shoot and kill it with one shot, and that was it. We didn't even need a gun, we could have used a bow or crossbow, or set a trap on a deer path (legality issues aside). But fishing, I don't even see where to start. Is that lake near me good to fish? Is the river? Why are there so many kinds of reels? My mind is boggled.

If it's a body of water that looks like it's been there for a while than it has fish.

You just need to understand that fish eat lil things and you can trick them by using a hook attached to a line.

How would you fish this? It is a very slow moving river. Depth ranges from 6" to 4 feet in this area.

I got a similar spot in terms of depth temp and flow rate, but being on the Wabash I have everything from bass to sturgeon to cats to gar to walleye. Been throwing spinners and bringing in some little smallmouth, but I would really like to catch something else. Seriously pulled over 20 smallmouth out so far, and the only other fish I've caught is a single (very nice) channel cat on a copper spoon. What am I doing wrong and how do I catch something better than a 10 inch smallmouth.

Found a $50 bill on the ground today, got a tank of gas and still have $10 left over. Local guy runs a great little baitshop out of his garage and one of the things he does is make custom traditional spinnerbaits for $6-$15 depending on what I want. Feel like splurging, and getting one, so let's talk about what bass really want

The water I'm in is moderately stained, slow to medium current, 10 is foot deep at the deepest, very little mud, rock bottom to the river, good lighting to it.

I'm thinking about solid white everything with a dimpled copper blade because grandpa used to have one like that and nostalgia and shit, but I'm also thinking if I'm going to spend that kind of money I aught to make the best combination I can.

This is my go to lure right now. Anywhere there are fish feeding on shad I can get fish on this. It is UV activated so lights up underwater and rattles and vibrates. Sucks that they are 7 dollars but worth it to catch fish. I usually get a few smallmouth, walleye or steelhead before I lose one, usually lose them to shredded line from teeth or rocks when a fish is on. RPR07-PTU

Well I use it off a kayak in water 5-30 feet deep. Cast and retrieve in various manners, usually get the best results off a slow erratic retrieve. Sometimes off a breakwall doing the same thing. It sinks fast so not good for shallow snaggy areas

In shallow water I like the scatter rap but generally only tie that on for certain occasions when I can see a few bigger fish in shallow water. I have my best results on a white grub on a white jig in the shallow rivers and creeks near me. Seems to catch everything that eats.

RPR07-PTU like I put at the end of the first post. Rapala Rippin Rap 7cm Pink Tiger Ultraviolet is the full name. I'm sure many color variations of that lure would work fine but I use the pink for personal visibility.

One of my favorite bait types for Pre-spawn or Post-Summer when bass are schooling on bait. I like to fish over rocky areas with a long rod with a medium action. If Im in a snaggy areas I use a sweep and reel retrieve to get the bait to skip over cover, often triggering bites. That softer action helps lessens snags, loads for better casts, and doesn't pull the bait away on bites. I like the Excalibur x-50s best in cover since they have a nice tipforward design, making harder to snag. In open water or vegetation, I like the Strike king red eye shad. It has a nice wiggle on the fall so i rip it upwards and let it fall on slightly slack line. I usually use 10lb mono and a high retrive speed reel. Unlike lipped cranks, a lipless crank doesn't have much resistance so low ratios are not needed. I like the high speed also to pick up line when Im sweep and reeling.

Thoughts on putting a little plastic grub on a spinbait?

Was at Walmart today and they had some chartreuse spiral/corkscrew tailed grubs in the clearance bin for $0.50 and I figured I had to bring them home for that price. I picked up a black and a white spinbait while they were there for $1 each and figured I would combine the two under the logic of slightly bigger bait = slightly bigger fish, but now I'm wondering if the extra tail will throw off my bait since even on a slow retrieve I have a lot of drag due to the current.

Obviously I'm going to try it no matter what, but what are your thoughts on adding cheap plastics to spinbaits?

I throw Gulps on spinnrbaits sometimes. The curly tail gives it some more movement.

Anybody taking advantage of this? I wanted to fish today so bad but I'm not even home from work yet and the rain is already rolling in. Even if I did brave the rain, the clouds will probably make it dark super early too.

I have been shilling Rippin Raps forever. They are my 2nd favorite lipless after the Sebiles. Never found one in the UV tiger tho. I have a few of the deep divers in those UV colors and never noticed any huge difference with em.

Dang I just googled Sebile and think I might need to get some of those. But I have to try out the $2.30 lipless crankbaits on aliexpress. Aliexpress has AMAZING deals and it seems like the right price considering even a rapala is just molded plastic unless its balsa but I would rather have the plastic. They had nice 5" jointed swimbaits for 3.50!!! And some sick deals on rods and reels too. They are the same shit you buy at cabelas but with chinese letters on them.

Kinda. Certain cheap shit works almost as well as the real ones, but other stuff is nowhere near as close.

The Sebile Flatt Shads don't rattle like most lipless cranks, but they have an incredible action and they are heavy for the size so they run kinda deep. Also they have that funky hook setup which sometimes I prefer because it doesn't catch up on everything.

After YuroSaintsFan sent me one with the Secret Santa last Xmas, I bought 4 or 5 more (and then lost most of them bc I used em so much) and landed so many nice bass within the next couple months. Def my favorite lipless. Rippin Raps are probably 2nd but they need larger hooks on some of them. Yo-Zuri Rattle n Vibes might be 3rd favorite.

KVD Red-Eye Shads are real solid too.

Beyond that the regular Rat-L-Traps are straight, the other Rapala Rattlin Raps are about the same, and I have a couple of those lippless Clack'n Raps too among the other shit. But the ones mentioned above seem to outfish all the others because of their wobble.

Whenever I see them, I'm always like "Why can't I find other Rapalas like Husky Jerks in that UV color?" but I guess I gotta order a couple of the Rippin Raps.

I still gotta get more Sebiles from Tackle Warehouse too but every time I look at em, I refuse to pay the $7 shipping on a couple baits because nobody else carries them aside from the few at Gamder Mtn right before they closed.

When the pressure is dropping, it's best. So as the storms are rolling in on the edge of that cold front, it should be incredible.

If you are doing a finesse presentation with say a soft plastic worm or are bottom bouncing a jig, 2-3 foot flouro leader doesn’t hurt.

For everything else I usually just go straight braid to lure. If the water is super clear then I use a leader on everything.

As far as using a snap swivel, they ruin the action of a lot of baits. Unless you are using primarily online spinner, spinner baits, chatter bait, stuff like that then I wouldn’t use one. You will only get quicker every time you tie a new knot so you might as well start getting good now

Tying directly to the lure doesn’t matter 80-90% of the time. You would only use mono/fluoro when you expect to run through sharp rocks a lot but in that case just leave your leader really long because you would need to cut off and re tie the lure if you see damage on the leader anyway. Another time is if you are fishing really realy clear water heavily pressure spot or something. If you gonna use a snap, use it without the swivel.

This is def for musky. They use these and bigger for them in "The Larry" or St Lawrence river. Lucite or Plastic would be a libility. Most baits that big like the Plow or Ledgend have metal lips but they can be bent easily.

If you're just going for LMB n stuff, don't even waste the time. Flouro is good for visibility but it doesn't matter for stuff like largemouths. Flouro is also good for abrasion resitance, but once again that's not a big issue with freshwater because you aren't fishing around concrete pylons with tons of little sharp shells or whatever the hell they are growing on them. Mono is worse than flouro but better than braid for visibility and basically a waste of time for that. You could also use it as a shock leader, but it has to be long to have any effect. 18" of mono won't do shit for that and enough to make a difference for shock resistance means you lose the sensitivity of braid.

Thanks, I'm mostly fishing bridges and dams ; fresh and salt. The water is pretty frothed up so I shouldn't have a problem. Maybe I'll pre-tie some 12-16" leaders with a swivel on the braid end and a snap on the lure end and store them in my box for when I need them.

Tbh, if it’s that situational, you might better off learning a simple braid to mono/fluoro knot. Surgeon knot is pretty simple and can be tied quickly. If your leader is not that long, your knot won’t go through your guides so surgeon’s knot main disadvantage of being bulky won’t matter. It sure will have less chance of failure than 2 knots connecting each end of your swivel.

I only make pre-made leader for carolina rig because that’s the only time I use a leader with swivel and I usually just tie a hook directly to one end instead of a snap.

That's not what it is tho. the weight shifts so you cast further.

I've had cheap lipless cranks that have 0 action or they run on their side. Almost every cheap squarebill has rolled over, and no two lures track the same. If you want to fish cheap no name lures then go ahead, but they aren't the same.

And the hooks won't be great but will be better than on cheap lures.

Oh yes. My gf would throw Texas rigged Fat Alberts in the cotton candy color (2/0 offset hook and 3/16 oz weight), and just swim them through the water column. She's caught LMB, SMB, rock bass, green sunfish, and even a pumpkinseed this way.

Meanwhile I throw everything I can and still catch nothing of quality through the summer. Now that it's cooling down I'm out fishing her though

It's pretty easy to get outfished using artificial if you aren't tuned in to what the fish want. 5" senko's are probably not the right presentation for a pond. I was slamming the pond fish this year on 1.5" white grubs on 1/16 oz jigs with an UL setup. Looks like a baby fish if swam or a dragonfly larva if dragged across the bottom. I also like using small rooster tails as a search lure.

So if carp are considered shit (I kinda agree) where does the redhorse sucker fall? The salmon river I fish has a massive school of giants that all cruise around in the shallows of the estuary. Would be kick ass to get one on the fly but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them feeding

I spooled up with 15 lb braid this year, good until I hook a smallmouth or trout that fights hard and has the force to break the knot. I would say a fluoro leader is well worth the cost.

Finally found a good pickerel spot but the closest good smallmouth spot is an hour away. There's a spot a half hour away but the biggest ones pulled out of there are 8-12 inches

just tie a palomar knot in it (go through the eye of the lure/hook/whatever twice instead of once) you will get 90%+ of the lines breaking strength out of it (15 pound power pro actually breaks closer to 20 than 15) and if your drag is set properly (1/3 the line's breaking strength) you wont break off unless it gets you in to cover.

I was using my 4wt since its my shortest and lightest rod I have but the trees covering the bank of that stream are so overgrown it’s imposible to actually cast. All I could do was pull out a rod length of line and set the fly in above a pool and attempt to have he fly drift down in but it was a disaster. Like I said above I couldn’t see where I was acatually putting it in since it was so small and it was too shallow to really even drift anything more than 2 feet without getting snagged on a leaf or rock

I think it's more global averaging. Sure it may not freeze solid by Thanksgiving any more but we're getting snow storms in April and we haven't had a >100* day in 5 years either instead of every single day of August being 105*F with 99% humidity.

In fact the average temperature of the last decade is 7* colder than the 100-year average and 27* colder than the previous decade where I live.

Down here on the lower Chesapeake you've got your choice of pretty much anything from mountain streams to offshore saltwater within a 90 minute drive, if your interested in saltwater the Striper run is just starting up in the lower rivers (York and James) but you'd need a small boat or kayak if you want to avoid the crowds.

That Lew's is probably decent too. Idk about longevity like a Shimano, but seems like they give you a nice setup for the $$$. There are always sales on the Carbon line too.

I rarely target carp and don't really catch them often, the ones I do catch are in good health generally. I was thinking about trying poor man's shrimp if I catch a young sheepshead that is in good health. They eat a lot of baby fish so I'd prefer to cull them when I can.

take it from me, ive been riding a motorcycle exclusively for the last 2 years, it is absolutely do-able. you dont need some BS telescopic rod, but if you insist on one, i've not managed to break my eagle claw pac-it spinning rod yet (not beyond simple repair, at least) but the reel is trash, just throw it away and buy something half decent while you are buying the rod, but in reality you really dont need anything more fancy than a 2 piece. you do, however, want the right backpack to serve as your tackle bag. i got one just from wal-mart that is perfect, it has a big pouch that lets me rest a plano box flat on the bottom, then it acts almost like a closable canvas bucket with straps. its kinda like this one

what that allows is your rods to really easily stand straight up while protruding through the zipper (i usually put them in the right corner so they are sticking up over my right shoulder at a slight angle)

if you still insist on a crazy many pieces rod, get a 4 or 5 piece travel rod, it will be stronger and more sensitive than a shitty telescoping rod.

I've actually never "broken" a Blackmax but I've had the drags shit out on 3 of them.

We get a Silvermax returned to our store at least weekly with something that shouldn't be breakable broken on it. The actual spools cracked in half, spindles bent, etc. I'd chalk it up to shitty people being shitty but it's literally the only reel this happens to.

st croix tidemaster inshore 7 ft 6 medium (3/8-3/4)
with a shimano nasci 4k On it
200 yards of 20 lb suffix 832 with various leader materials
Light enough its usuable for things like largemouth and could even throw for trout
But enough backbone to handle stripers up to 30 lbs ( maybe more, haven't tested it yer)
enough braid on it to jig for fluke or black sea bass in 80-90 ft of water
effective casting weight is about 1/8th ounce to 1 1/2 ounces

From VA. The Upper James has muskie and smallies. If you want good smallie action, drift the Scottsville area. If you want to catch a muskie, Eaglerock or Clifton forge area is the ticket. The lower James has blues, flatheads and striper. Try the city of richmond, abundant spots for shorefishing.
The New is loaded full of muskie. Has big smallies as well. Pretty much any section is good. For numbers of Smallmouth, the North Branch of Shennandoah can't be beat.
For trout, the Jackson River, Bull Pasture and Cow Pasture rivers are where its at. They are bigger than the puny streams you were talking about. Now till May is good time to fish any of these places.

Check VGIF's site for trout stocking. Locus Shade is a tiny pond but get loaded with some big ones. Lurray has a ton of Streams that get stocked often.
Also the Potomac has some big blue cats and striper. Go to Fletcher's Boat house during spring and rent a row boat. Buy shad, eel or white perch ahead of time at an international market and use that as cut bait.

I recommend the okuma voyager, the reel aint all that so I tossed a stratus V on it and it's a great setup. Its medium light but I caught a decent flathead on it and it was one of the funnest fights I've had

it doesnt hurt anything. the worst case scenario (unless you're a complete knob and step on it) with the rod/reel getting in the water is that the drag is a little light for a few minutes after because its wet, but it really doesn't hurt anything unless you stuff it in a rod tube dripping wet and let rust and mould take hold. when you are fishing in saltwater you actually should rinse it with fresh water. so yeah, its not hurting a thing. fly reels are incredibly simple, they have no gears, no freespool, nothing, the crank handle is rivited straight to the spool, and it is literally a spool with a drag. sand usually wont hurt anything because there's nothing to really hurt, and if it does get somewhere, it is probably between the frame and spool, in which case there is a switch that lets you pop the spool off in about half a second, and you can rinse it with fresh clean water.

well my new saltwater flybox is coming together. there are 2 white clousers that are still drying, so i have 23 more of those to tie, i was going to tie some more of those sand fleas, then some shrimp (both top water and sinking, 3 of each in sizes 8, 6, and 4)

Shit, that's crazy.

I wanna get an STX too. I like my SX a lot, so light and the smaller body makes it super nice to palm. The STX has the better braking system with the centrifugal and magnetic and I like that feature on my Lew's.

I need to get out fishing tho and use the rods I have right now. Gonna be pouring all day today from this lil tropical system.

I used to be against going to packed spots but after trying it a couple times and having fun the few times a year it happens are alright with me.

There's a walleye run near me and you generally get just enough room to cast. You are pretty much guaranteed to catch fish and make friends if you can handle a line tangle without going full REEEEEEEEEE
