I started with pic related, its cabelas starter kit. I have no complaints with it as starter gear. The next vice I buy will be rotary, and I may invest in a ceramic bobbin, but overall this thing is solid.
I also got a beginners material kit from cabelas. This was ok, the best part was it had a booklet that taught basic patterns and terminology. I moved past the materials they gave me pretty quick.
In order to get better I would tie a shitload of wooly buggers. They are a basic pattern, you can do a lot of variations on color scheme, and they just plain work. I learned a lot of my technique and stuff tying wooly buggers
