Any opinions on bamboo wool vs. merino wool as baselayer?
Looking for presents for the holidays, and while I like merino wool, I'd like to go for the cheaper option if the qualities are the same.

i bought two bamboo t-shirts from aldi (uk) and they seem to take longer to dry than my merino shirts, they're comfy/smooth but dry SO slowly, got some merino wool shirts and can't complain about them, comfy, warm, and resist stinking for a few days which i really like, have a couple of rab meco shirts (coconut/merino mix) seem to have all the advantages of merino but feel like they dry just that bit quicker

Merino is significantly better in terms of performance. For a less active material bamboo feels great against the skin though. It's really not that much better than cotton.

Thank you. Was afraid that was the case. Guess I'll go with merino wool, then.

There are some 2-layer mixes with polyester (inner) and merino wool (outer), but I guess they're bad as well.

The 2 layer stuff (see coldpruf platinum) is certainly not bad but straight merino is definitely better. That being said, if you were MY senpai and you gave me merino for Christmas I'd be happy as fuck.

helly hansen 'lifa warm' is polyester or polypropylene inner with a merino outer, i have top/leggings combo of it, i find it is comfy but begins to smell quicker than my pure merino

pure merino is better if the temp is lower, but i felt 'drier' wearing the lifa warm after activity, it also features a venting zip that comes in handy where as HH's pure merino didn't have one

another option i have picked up and seems pretty good so far is under armour's 'cold gear' (synthetic), it has the same kind of polygiene lining that rab and others use and in my testing so far seems to do quite well holding back smell

For a silkweight or light midweight baselayer merino is absolutely top notch, but if you're after something pretty heavy then the various grid fleeces (UA Base 3.0/4.0, USGI ECWCS layer 2, etc) are better. They breathe better, are warmer, lighter for the same thickness, somewhat more compressible, and dry very fast. It is usually made from polyester so it can get stinky faster than merino though.

I don't think I'll chance the 'cold gear' tbH.
Thank you for the input. I'll have to wait and see for a bit longer, but it's good knowing that bamboo is not something to go for, and that there are good options for two-layers (smell is something to keep in mind though, as this will be the only baselayer he'll have for a good while).

It's baselayer I'm looking for. It seems the most appropriate for pretty much everything, and he already has good jackets and sweaters (Ulvang Rav, for instance).

What marketing calls "bamboo" is actually viscose/rayon, made from bamboo because it's a cheap source of cellulose. (Viscose used to be called rayon wool at some point because it can somewhat mimic the look and was blended with it.)
As for it's properties, it's basically like cotton when it comes to moisture management, except it's also less durable (especially when wet).
