In 1800 it was the nægrœs working the fields, in 1900 it was the all the Irish and Chinese immigrants, in 2000 it was overseas laborers in China, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and little kids working mines in Africa, and to an extent illegal Mexican laborers within the US. If society tanked and the economy reset we'd just go back to having the lowest class in America be the slave class again working the factories and fields.
The US could sustain itself indefinitely based on its agricultural power, climates, natural resources, geographical size, and population.
