Amazon's being a bitch about sending even their fake chinese 18650s through the mail. So I'm shelving/selling those lights off and looking to standardize on the Panasonic Eneloops. Looking to standardize though.

Aside from my FM radio, alarm clock and one of those flashlights that use 3x AAA... I don't really have anything that uses the AAA size anymore.

Does /out/ have anything that uses AAA or did you also switch completely to AA or USB power banks?

Both of my headlamps still use AAA, but that's it for /out/ stuff. My TV remote uses them and I think I have some toy or something my niece gave me that uses them. My good camera uses CR2's and my good handheld flashlights all use CR123's.

Out of curiosity, what were you using 18650's in as far as lights? I thought the only things that took them were RC vehicles, vape pens, and AEG airshit rifles.

I have a Fenix and a Surefire flashlight that takes two CR123 or the 18650. The 18650s from China would usually fail in one way or another.

Oh right. And I forgot my hearing protection also uses the AAA size, but I suppose that's not something I'm bringing with me on a typical /out/ing.

My headlamp, the waterproof flashlight I take kayaking, the identical backup waterproof flashlight, and all 4 of my bicycle taillights take AAAs.

all take AA.

You need about 4 of those to equal one 18650, that's about twice the weight you need to bring with yourself in batteries.

yup... typical AAA is 600mah. Expensive ones are 900mah. AA's are around 2400mah at the same voltage. So they feel a bit fatter, but each hold ~4x as much power.

Than you look at the 18650's, which run at 3x the voltage of a AAA or AA(so 1 battery should replace 3 AAA's). Those flashlights that use those AAA cradles to turn them into one fat tube(lotta LED Lensers are like that) have the same voltage @ ~600mah.... Where as a 18650 is a bit thinner, and provides the SAME VOLTAGE and depending on the brand and quality(sanyo, panasonic, etc...) are 3400mah. So nearly 6 TIMES as much power. And then.... after all that shit gets laid out, you get to factor in the reality that lithium deals with extreme cold better than nimh(rechargeable AA/AAA's) and alkaline(non-rechargeable AA/AAA's)

tl;dr - If you can move your gear to 18650s(or cr123s) you'll be so much better off provided you can plan ahead to have spares, since buying in a rural gas station isnt too likely. Only issue is its hard to find decent quality gear that uses the cells. Its either shitty chink gear, or very very expensive professional/military gear.

Have you looked into 14500s? A lot of lights that take them also take standard AAs. Also, checked.

So now I'm curious, having never messed around with 18650's. I've got several Surefire flashlights that are 2xCR123A. Should be the same diameter and same voltage as 1x 18650. Would I be safe in swapping those?

Surefire liked to give dire warnings about using non surefire batteries.

They were right in a way. A lot of the chinese fakes are questionable in the heat and short-circuit protection and especially lie about their capacity and high-drain performance.

Still, even they are now selling their own Surefire branded 18650s.

If you do buy some, make sure they're from a reputable source. Look at your flashlights, if you see a coil on the inside you can use the flat top 18650s. If not, then you'll have to get ones that do have a positive terminal sticking out.

While searching for dual purpose AA/14500 lights I stumbled upon the Lumintop brand.

Turns out people have been swapping parts back and forth between the brands without issue. But that's not all. Looking over the Lumintop line their current stuff is seriously better than the stuff offered on County Comm. Less than half the price and more than 2x the performance (using 14500 cells which the CC version cautions against.).

I really did like my old CC TPF (which lumintop currently doesn't have a copy of) and I know I'm probably a sucker for paying more...but since it's all but confirmed by CC, is there any reason to wait for a Maratac version if the Lumintop is better and cheaper?

Uses 18650 or 3 AAA.
Then went to local vape store and got 3 MXJO 18650s on sale for $20.

Its a hell of a good flashlight. Insanely bright, tough, and water proof.
Its crazy light too. I often forget its in my pocket.

On a side note. If you have a batteries plus store in your area, they have 18650s too

Yeah I'm still pretty bitter at Surefire over the whole "well if you ever even thought about putting a non-Surefire™ battery in it it voids your lifetime warranty" thing after I had a direct-from-Surefire-ordered weaponlight that came DOA and they tried to give me that shit.

Also, it shipped with an Energizer CR123a in it, not a Surefire one.

Looking over Surefire's site apparently the 18650 is only supposed to be used in a couple of their models and will void their warranty BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I wonder at what point their lights just aren't worth it compared to the knockoffs or streamlight.
