Does a headlamp have any advantages compared to a flashlight + headband combo for hiking? As far as I've seen most headlamps target the yuppie goretex wearing outdoorsy crowd with touch controls and other gimmicks, whilst you can get more for your money with flashlights (better tints, battery life, output, standard batteries).

Do any of you use headlamps for hiking at night?

I go with a headlamp, but that's only because I got a good headlamp for work reasons. I usually keep it off or on one of the lower light settings though depending on how bright the night is.

Are the good ones enough to search for a sign or where a trail starts, or look at whats on the other side of a field? When I know the terrain, I'm comfortable with low levels of light, but when I need to find a way I prefer to just light up the whole area.

Generally no. The absolute brightest headlamp I've been around was advertised as 350 lumen and only threw usable amounts of light for about 40 feet. Much of this is focus but in general they're nowhere near as bright as a decent handheld.

Have you ever slept inna tent? Because little light is what you need, cooking, going true your stuff, take a midnight piss, read a bit, thats what you need your headlight for and most of the times you use it on low or on red. Thats why everyone has one of those.

Around camp it’s a lot more feasible to get a headlamp. That one that OP posted is actually a newer version of the one I have and it’s great.

I agree that around camp the headlamp wins for being lighter weight and more user friendly. Looking across a field is exaggerated, but I think that it's great to be able to see 30 meters in front of you when you have to choose a path, and makes hiking at night a whole lot easier for me.

Headlamps are far more useful than regular flashlights. I know you love to fantasize about casting a beam across wide open areas and illuminating them with the power of the sun, but the reality is %99 of outdoor light use is
1: following a trail a few feet infront of you,
2: rooting around in your backpack
3: reading
4: cooking or some other task right in front of you once the sun goes down.

All greatly improved by having a headlamp and 2 hands free. I'm a flashlight geek and I only carry a traditional flashlight as a backup anymore.

They're legit. I swear by them now. Only carry a tiny spare regular flashlight as backup. LEDs and lithium battery technology now allows them to be extremely compact and lightweight, and with insane light output if/when you want it. Also obviously it will always be pointing in the direction you're facing, and free up both your hands. Great for hiking or doing camp chores in the dark. I need it most though because I head out fishing in predawn hours when it's totally dark and I'm loading/launching my canoe.or drilling holes in the ice...need my hands and to see what I'm doing. Without it I have to hold a flashlight in my mouth which gets very annoying after 5-10 mins.

For a few bucks you can buy something like pic related, and convert your handheld into a headlamp. Less ergonomic for sure, might be harder to adjust, but frees up your hands and you can use a powerful handheld in it, if you have a need for one.

It does everything a flashlight does but leaves both your hands free, which is great for doing stuff that requires both hands, and chances are if you are a fumble fucking around in the dark with a light you are probably doing something that requires both hands...unless you are just taking in the sights. The only thing a flashlight really has over a head lamp is the lumen output...but my head lamp does 350 lumens and I don't ever see myself needing more than that...unless I need to burn someones retinas out from a half a mile away.
