I mean it's like 400 USD for a light-weight MSR 2 person tent from REI, another 300 for a lightweight REI Magma sleeping bag.

Tbcfh the most expensive piece of gear i have is a hatchet at around 50$. A tent is optional as you can just take a big piece of tarp with you and build it vanilla. Set your forest ablaze and a summer sleeping bag will do.

great gear, many of the items are overpriced and marked up there.
for hammock camping, a cheap vietnamese factory hammock works if youre starting it. tarp, look on amazon for some again. like chill gorilla and bearbutt. then you just need to make an alcohol stove, get a cheap pot from REI or some shit. theres guides online that can tell you more than i can

And there's the meme. Stop going after the "lightweight" crap. All of my /out/ gear cost me less than $500 combined and I have more shit than I can stuff into a car. So, I only hike to a basecamp with a tiny portion of everything, only the stuff I really need which like like $120 worth of stuff. If I'm car camping then nearly everything can come along, but I never do that anyway. Otherwise, I bring along a $50 game cart for extra stuff for getting to basecamp, which can be up to 15 miles of hiking. The game cart is the most expensive piece of crap I have.

I have a few tents, coolers, lanterns, stoves, cast iron cookware, tools, etc. Base camp stuff. I wasn't even counting clothing since I use that every day.

/out/ is a commitment hobby just like, snowboarding, boating, motorcycles, PC gaming.

for me getting gear i need is a priority over going out to bars every night, eating out for lunch everyday. its just prioritizing.

also guess ill tell you what i told my fiance when she wanted to get into bow and arrow with me... dont drop a ton of money on gear all at once. find out if you actually like the activity first. and if so >>1130890 is right. you will build up your gear pile over time. your first sleeping bag does not need to be -40F. your first tent does not need to be mountain hardware. the only things you really should not skimp on are boots, socks, and gloves.

This. I have a 20degree North Face sleeping bag that was $80 that I got as a gift, a Eureka solitaire tent which is on sale on field and streams website for like $54, normally $89. And my backpack is a $50 Eddie Bauer one from Target. Most expensive piece I have is my boots which were $120. You slowly fill in clothing as money allows. I want to invest in a jet boil system but I haven’t come up with the extra money yet.

But another thing to consider is how good the warranty is on this gear. A lot of places will replace it no questions asked, and that’s why the cost is a little more. Food for thought.

First of all there is budget gear like surplus, we are just a regular people and we buy not all gear at once, for example i bought all my gear in like 2-4 years, instead of 500$ tent i got surplus poncho/tarp for 30 euros, bacpack for- 40 euros, yesterday got a winter sleeping bag for 120 euros , gear comes by time, at first i was using some old swedish army rucksack from national guard and a regular plastic sheat for tent.
Retards like you think that to go /out/ you need expensive gear, if u dont have brain then maybe, but better stay home cuz u will die out there

Also Eddie Bauer and Black Diamond are really good on warranties as well. My EB backpack had a small rip and was 5 years old and I decided to bring it into their store and the lady was like “oh yeah go pick out a new one!” Did the same thing with a pair of jeans and pair of shorts a while back

it is not that comfortably and warm like a tent, if you set it up correctly (it has a lot of ways) it will protect you against rain and wind and depending how you set it can separate you from the floor
the principal issue that i have found are the mosquitos bc it is not closed and the temperature, nothing to worry about if you have a good fire

I hate this argument. While yes they did, untold thousands of them died doing the same thing, and that’s why they handed together (yet still died). If your objective is to hike a certain trail, you can’t spend half your day gathering firewood, building a fire ring, getting a fire going, cooking food, building a shelter, just to suffer and barely sleep all night. You don’t need to spend a fuck ton of money to get started, but you can’t expect to get everything you need off the land.

Our Boy Scout camp had this thing called Firefox where they dressed up in the traditional garb, lived in a small hut made of logs, had to skin their own meat or forage for food, shot muzzleloaders, and a few other things for the week. It was pretty cool but I never did it, the kids in it were a little too self righteous and it pissed me off.

A shit 150 dollar tent won't last you a typical summers use. A 500 dollar tent will last you 10 years.

Second, don't buy stuff new, get it used. You save 30-50%. More like 50-80 if you can find it on facebook / craigslist / garage sales

I made a thread echoing a thread about getting all your gear from amazon for babbys first overnighter for < $250.

It was supposed to be a proof of concept, and not something anyone should actually do- getting some day hikes under your belt is prolly a good idea.

Anyways, fuck this idea that you need to spend a ton of money to have fun while out. I make good money but prefer to save it. I have a nice tent but prefer my cheap tarp. I have a Patagonia jacket but prefer my $5 thrift wool sweater. I rely on my skills more, and my mind isn’t clouded by how much I spent or how my gear is performing, I’m just in the woods and these things are comforts.

Consumerism is fine, but it doesn’t have a place in he outdoors.
