I built a rocket stove with one of the pre-fab dragon burner cores but was limited to the 6 inch by my flue and chimney size. And for various reasons, I never did / couldn't really add thermal mass. The heat off the barrel alone was only adequate for shoulder seasons so after the second year I ditched it. I still have the core, hoping to use it in another house eventually.
It sucked admitting defeat and going back to a shitty inferior traditional stove, but I just don't have the time or skill set right now to really do rocket mass properly. A big part of it comes down to:
1. I live in a log home with some large windows which makes venting and locating a challenge
2. My dirt around here is really not conducive to making cob and I couldn't settle on an alternative thermal mass
