How do you guys like to kill your fish before you filet them? Normally I just hit them bluntly over the head to knock them out then drive a knife into their skull but i'm curious how many of you throw them in ice, suffocate them, just flat out filet them, etc

I'm a big fan of the 1/16oz-1/8oz underspins with a curly tail grub on them for panfish or small bass. Beetle Spins are a classic too. The Gulp 2"-3" curly tail minnows have been a favorite too.

If the panfish are being really picky, either the Mini Mites or some tiny jigheads with something like the 1"-1.5" Gulp grubs and minnows in the tiny jars.

And obligatory Mepps and Rapala mention.

I've spent like $100 on fishing lures and spent many hours learning how to use them but i always end up going back to worm and bobber at the end of the day and outfish all of my lures, anyone else experience this?

I fish mostly saltwater and bait is not as simple as and earth worm. Saltwater live bait is more costly and not as easily maintained. Lure make my fishing trip more simple and enjoyable. I can cover more water with lures too since I’m not as worried about live bait dying faster after too many re cast.

Almost all the fish I eat are filleted while they are still alive. That can depend on where we go and how long the drive is but I always put them on ice for the drive regardless. Sometimes if I go walleye fishing at night I will do the same process but instead of filleting them right away I put them in the fridge whole and fillet them the next day.

I'm pretty sure bass are as opportunistic. I've had them eat corn while fishing for carp. Bass also depend on insects at a young age and I've caught older bass on lil flies.

They're not as predatory as y'all think. It's just that most ways of catching them are focused on predatory aspect.

yea, the small ones really prefer tiny tiny baits. I understand people like to fish for just the bigger panfish but Im more about quantity when panfishing. Getting some fly-sized hooks gets you more fish.

I like getting micro jig heads that could be used as fly gear so I dont have to worry about any other tackle at the end of my line. pic related is 1/80th and a 1/32nd oz. With 4lb test you can easily chuck the 1/32nd anywhere in terms of creeks. 1/80th is for actual microfishing and I normally will use fly gear or just a bobber with spinning gear.

From what I know, only ugly stick is the decent shakespeare rod. However, they are not sensitive and not that great for lure fishing. It all depends on what region you are in and what species are avaliable when it comes to inshore and kayak. I’ve been looking at cheap intro rod for a cousin and I see that the hurricane calico jack has pretty good review and might be what you are looking for

If you aren't trying to spend much, check out Berkley Lightning Rods if they come in a size that works for you. I have told a few other people about them and everybody agrees that it's a really nice rod for the $40 price tag and feels way better than Ugly Stiks or the other <$50 choices.

First rod I used was the “Shakespeare catch more fish lake/pond combo” I used it for about 5 months before I got an actual rod and reel. It held up with about zero maintenance and I’ve pulled up my PB largemouth on it. First bass pictured is about 12 inches and the second one was around 17-18 inches. Pretty good imo for $30

What's your budget?

A Surf rod is going to be radically different from a kayak rod.

You'll be making some pretty heavy compromises if you want one that works for both.

Ideally for a surf rod you want something 12'+ while with a kayak you want 8' or shorter.

Daiwa makes some pretty good surf rods.

Personally I would love a decent spincast reel and a small rod with pistol grip handle. Both in the UL-range.

Spincast reels are generally crap. Babbys first reel and so simple to use that you can't fuck it up no matter how hard you try so they are most often found on starter-kits of well, questionable quality.
Imagine the user-friendliness (even friendlier actually) of spinning reels combined with baitcaster precision and feel. They don't cast as well as either though and being a jack of all (both) trades they are the master of none so to speak.
Sadly I've never once here in Denmark encountered a spincast reel worth even one shekel. We be spinning reelers.
And the few spincast reels I can find online that are seemingly decent seem to cost twice as much in the EU as they do in the states (e.i. Zebco ZO3PRO - ~60USD vs. ~83Euro). I want max comfy setup that even my wife and infant daughter can use. Sucks...

I have a zebco 202 I've used as a loaner for years. Every time before it comes out, maybe once every year or two, I remove the old line and put on about 20 yards of fresh line which prevents most line problems. 20 yards is plenty for a few hours of sitting on the dock and catching bluegill and maybe a bullhead or crappie
Also a spinning reel is not difficult to operate and you might as well just teach them how to use one if that's what you know.

Sure, making a basic cast in clear open space and manage to land your shit into the water is the very basic of it. That the very least you need to do to have any chance to hook a fish at all. It's a equivalent of learning throwing a ball forward. Just throwing a ball doesn't make you a quarterback though. There's huge amount of learning curve involve know location, technique, and lure/bait. When you get decent, you'll figure out where to fish, how to fish, what you are fishing for (target specie) and it's not just put shit in the water. Even putting thing into a water part has a huge learning curve. Just look at this video

Won't comment on the price (no clue about US prices) but 130USD for a 199USD rod (Fenwick website) sounds decent.
I have last years' model (handle all-cork) though. 9 feet, 6-24g lure rating. Found it at a clearance sale for 500DKK (78USD).
It is a pretty damn good rod from the relatively little I've used it (I prefer UL, even on the open coast). Pretty sensitive, nice backbone and light to carry around. So far I don't have a single complaint about it.

Where I am, Right now is prob the best time of the year to be targeting musky with lures. They are up shallow feeding hard. Jerkbaits, spinners or even topwater are killer. I live in Virginia but if you are farther North, troll large minnow baits right along steep breaklines.

If you can get a M with some fast action, you should be straight. If it's some wobbly Ugly Stik type shit, get a MH. Changes so much by brand. My CarbonLite M-Fast is great for 1/2oz stuff but my Fenwick Eagle M-Fast wouldn't feel nearly as good with the 1/2oz as the 1/4oz. Fenwick is also a spinning rod and Johnny Morris is casting so even the same model and brand, that will make a difference between two M rods.

So the result of this is pretty grim

Sand went all the way inside the internal gear compartment. I did my best to clean it out and now regrease it and put it back together. The reel is now usable but it is not quite the same and not as smooth. To make matter worse, I lost the anti reverse lever cam spring somewhere in the cleaning process so the switch to turn on and off doesn’t have spring switch anymore. It wasn’t something I actively check often for as I rarely use the switch. The anti-reverse still hold though if I move the lever in the same position. I feel quite bummed out still as it is my favorite set up and it’s not whole anymore. It was a used shimano symette I bought off craiglist and I used for more than a year for surf fishing. The internal has quite a beaing by now. I probably gonna retire it soon and might consider messing with a memecasting set up though. I gonna try to use it tomorrow to see how it feel. I still have a barely used shimano sedona as back up but I’m currently have that spooled with 40lb braid, which is heavier than I prefer for the surf ( currently have 15 lb braid on my symetre)

Was fishing a pond, cold ass conditions, unexpected bass hooks up on my micro jig and I lose him before netting him.

This has happened before with small hooks; always when they're nearing the surface near my net.

Trash fish unhooked itself, take your free win.

In the picture is an example of doing it wrong. Net should pull the fish out from being completely submerged.. Fish aren't affected by gravity underwater but if you tug them through the air this creates a ton of unnecessary line tension. Another tip is to take your time, don't hurry a green fish in to be netted, fight him til he is tired out.

Tips for fishing when it's cold? Was 31℉ today when I went out and my rod tip would grab water droplets and freeze up. Also, first time in that spot that I've gone an hour with no bite on an inline spinner which has me thinking that it's time to change gear up a little. What should I do now that the weather has changed?

The river never freezes so ice fishing isn't an option, but should I be looking into ice fishing techniques and apply that to cold but not frozen water?

Silicone spray is the correct product to use here, petroleum is to be avoided since it can degrade line, and you should't put WD40 on anything that you aren't stripping of old grime or rust as it contains both solvents and lubricants.

Fucking net always gets barbs stuck in it when unhooking the fish.

Debarbed the hook to remove it from the net.

Hooked up with something (likely not a carp) that kept giving me headshakes, tossed to barbless hook with ease once we hit the weed bed.

Put on a barbed hook

Ran out of chum

Got one more pickup, but the fish dropped it almost instantly.

Barbless hooks are tricky in weeds with soft mouthed fish.

Also holy fuck did it rain.

Still in the low 50's. Water is getting down to about 50 degrees.

So, this spring I am heading up to Washburn county, Wisconsin to do some pike/musky fishing. Recently been fooling around with the idea of using an alabama rig for at least a little bit after watching the video I'll link below. The problem I can't find an answer to is legality of this in Wisconsin waters. I can't find mention of the alabama rig specifically in their regulations, but It does state that "It is Illegal to fish with more than three hooks, baits, or lures". Does this mean If I were to build a 5 arm rig I could put 5 baits on it so long as only 3 of them have hooks in it, or does this mean that I would have to put 3 baits on it and put an unhooked blade on the other two arms? On a similar note by 3 hooks baits or lures I am assuming I can use 1-2 treble hooks per bait as each bait would count as its own individual lure, or should I read that as 3 points (so a treble hook would count as three hooks) or as three hook units (so a lure with three treble hooks would max me out on hooks)? If anyone is familiar with wisconsin fishing laws I would love to hear your input on this. Trying to not accidentally break the law here.

4. The answer is 4 fish. They were all mostly my fault, but dammit I think the fishin gods were plotting against me today.

Lost two when they jumped and one that got me halfway wrapped in a branch. The last one was weird. I got a good solid bite, and I set the hook, the fish pulled drag, then the lure just came out of his mouth.

When I looked at the lure the hook was still in the lure. I guess there was slack in the line when I set the hook or something.

At least I managed to catch one.

Ever since ive been a nut about micro-trout-magnet-like jigs.
It was cool to meet him again today, talked more about fishing and some of the fishing experiences since. He tells me about landing a 5 lb lmb one his 2lb test ice rod- damn thing ran under the dock and kept swimming down the pond. Other stories like catching a carp through the ice... and how another guy caught one the same day on the same lake and posted it online- and he figured it was the same carp that was having a mental breakdown.

Somehow my friend didnt catch anything, despite using the same lure. It's essential to keep the small jig pretty still. I wasnt catching anything for a while until I started talking to the gent and started to ignore what I was doing with my jig. I think he lacks the understanding of feeling a bite- he'll either keep the jig sitting with like two feet of slack line or keep it tight but moving around too much
Next time I gotta give him a bobber and just tell him to leave slack in the line + wait for it to go under.

Any fly tiers here?

I raise ornamental birds, particularly pheasants and ducks but I have just about a little of everything. I've been saving the nicer feathers I find in the pens as well as all the feathers off dead birds because I used to give them to an old lady who did crafts with them. Thinking about getting into fly fishing just to have a use for these feathers, but I don't know the first thing about either of the production or use of them. I'm sure I could pick up the fishing side rather quick but what am I looking at in terms of actually using the feathers?

Whenever I'm taking someone fishing that I don't want to make a regular thing of fishing with I set them up with gear that isn't ideal for the fish I'm targeting. Take my kid cousin fishing the other day and gave her a treble hook with a spring on it with a small spoon blank tied above it and a bucket of punch bait while we were targeting Bass. She managed to catch a couple and had a good time, but not a great time. No doubt she would go again if offered, but is unlikely to ask to tag along every weekend.

When I was a kid dad would do the same thing, give me a big old pike spoon while we were fishing for bluegill.

I fly tie amateurly. I mostly tie feathers on a jig to make marabou jigs. I start by getting a feather tied as the tail, then another feather but wrap the feather itself around the hook shank, moving horizontally, to create a body. If it looks like something, and if it moves through the water straight, fish will bite it.

I got a cheap $3 vise and what i do is clamp the hooks into it between some thin cardboard/paper so it doesnt move around. I bought some thread and a bobbin and super glue so my poor whip finishing skills seal it up nice.

I normally throw them on the manure pile and let the cats/mother nature sort them out, but lately I used to pull out as much of the bone as I can and grinding them up with some grain/hay pellets and making them into feed for my birds.

I mostly raise minnows to make feed now

no not easy at first. closer to the water you have to keep the backcast up and focus on a spot. if you start looking around and throwing with your body make you off balance sometime. same with casting and fishing pontoon and kick boats.

Depends on your budget. For $80 the No. 8 tackle Hellbent, the Abu vendetta, and the favorite balance are all really good imo. I think it's pretty hard to buy a bad rod unless you go super cheap.

I got about $100 to spend right now, work slows down in the winter and I got more important things than fishing to worry about. Dad borrowed my truck to get a load of corn because he heats with corn and his never runs once it gets cold. Didn't check the back and now I have to replace my gear. He offered me his fishing pole, but I only fish cats and pike/musky and there is no way in hell I am using his custom built ultralight for that. Been using a 7' M/H relatively cheap uglystick/shakesphere spinning reel combo that I got at a yard sale with its packaging still on it for $20.

I can probably salvage the reel, but I honestly haven't looked at it yet. The arm for the line is broken and I don't know how much work its going to take to repair/replace that, might have to replace both.

Tbh the reel is the one that probably crap out first and then rod is salvagable as ugly stik rod are durable as fuck but they don't feel great while lure fishing. If you are fishing for musky/pike and cats then you probably don't need that much sensitivity in the first place anyway. I would say get something like a shimano sedona 4000 and pair up with your rod to see how it feel first.

There's also some combos under $100 in the pastebin, but usually those will be mediums at the heaviest. Or at least that's what I always see in stores.

The rod is broken in 3 places. I don't think its going to be fixable like the reel. First priority is to replace the rod while I try fix the reel, but the reel may need replaced as well.

Tbh I always find the premade rod and reel combo a bit sketchy. One thing always seem to be worse than the other in a combo. It's almost like they are baiting you to eventually upgrade either the rod or the reel.

You can even go for 7'6 or 8 ft and that would help your casting distance from shore. M model for that should be sufficient in freshwater and if you want a good fight with your fish. Go for MH if you aren't that confident and you have absolute giant catfish and musky often where you are fishing
