Finally MacGyver'd a scotch-eyed adapter for my auger bit. Drcided on pvc because its lighter and maleable.

Looking forward to making swedish torches/rocket stoves and camp furniture. Anyone else do this? Far North Lonnie posted some today.

heated the bit on a stove for a while then jammed it thru a pilot hole in the cap. it's not budging, i went all the way down into that log and back up. if anything the threads on the cap will strip before the bit comes out.

Remember to paint the PVC. It gets brittle in the sun. Sand it first.

Worked fine but i did hear the threads starting to strip. Might need to rethink the cap attachment in the future.

You will wish you used metal once the PVC gets cold. Make it out of steel, its junk in its current state. It may work once or twice, but it sure as shit will break on you.

Typically you can just find a certain size range of bits at flea markets though and of course you better have an auger bit file to get them in working order.

for hand braces you want a solid center bit. those squareish ones. There are also two types of auger bits. single flute (irwin style) and double flute (jennings). Jennings are a lot harder to make and are more expensive. They are recommended for more finer woodworking stuff although there's really not much difference. Irwin style is cheaper and actually evacuates wood chips a little better. Irwin still makes these bits themselves but apparently they are shit. You can find jennings and irwin style bits at these two links if anyone is interested. I did a lot of research a while back. ICS actually makes some of the larger sizes which could be very useful in outdoors projects.
