From my experience, I've discovered that going /out/ alone was preferred for me.
Then I met a dude when I switched jobs that is into the /out/doors in the same way, and same enthusiasm that I have. Also the same physical shape to be able to do the same things I enjoy. Now I prefer his company, because when we do multi day trips together, there are hours spent not talking to each other.
Some meals spent alone, etc. But having someone to split the gear, and chores is great. Getting stoned is more fun with conversation.
Tl:Dr, just start going /out/ in the way you enjoy it, and don't worry about what anyone else thinks.
