Anyone here use a GPS mapping/tracking app on their smartphone for the outdoors?
Mostly just for tracking my route and occasionally marking spots.
I currently use GPS Essentials and GPS Status on Android.
Any recommendations?

Why not just get a real GPS?
You can buy a Garmin Geko or eTrex that'll do what you want it to and then some, with far better battery life/durability than a smartphone.

Agreed. I used to fuck about with this on android, then sucked it up and bought a real GPS. AA batteries are a life saver.

Bonus usage: download the routable OSM maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl and help avoid being swindled by 3rd world taxi drivers when they start going off route.

I generally don't use turn-by-turn navigation since it removes the fun of exploring new areas and makes people lazy/stupid

I agree with the others though, get a standalone gps unit if you plan to use it heavily for navigation/mapping (i would if i had the dosh)

I'm planning on geting a mid-range hand held Garmin soon. For now an IP67 rated smart phone in a otter box is rugged enough.

Usually not while really "out" though. More like, on a train going by and see a spot where the river made a beach- mark it to return in summer.

It costs a bit of money, but GPSkit for iphone is badass... even has a track editor app that you can use with it. Runs off the GPS alone in the phone so you don't need reception to use it as long as you download the map prior to going /out/

The only thing I like about my Android's GPS is having Google Maps and aerial photos on it. I've used that a few times, mostly to figure out tree density and slope as I'm making my way somewhere through the woods.

Pic related... hit "002" a week or two before, tried to get to there from Area 54 (The previous week we tried to get to 54 heading south, couldn't figure out how to get through the trees). Pulled out the phone and got enough signal to pull aerial photos of the area, and ended up connecting the dots that afternoon.

A real GPS is worth the money.
