I have 2 : one merino wool I use all year as a scarf while hiking and sometime on my head. One fleece and synthetic that I use for snowboarding to fill the gap between my jacket collar and my helmet.

I also use them to cover my eyes while sleeping.

They work. Even the thinner cloth ones keep enough of your breath in to keep your face warm on really cold and windy days. Great for keeping the sun off your neck and dust out of your face too.

I have a couple different ones from the army that i still use. My only complaint is that they get frosty when you breath through them. We called them foreskins for obvious reasons.

I have a thick smartwool one that's great for skiing or extreme cold, and thinner ones for general use

picked up a coolmax one in south africa which was amazing for hiking, soaked in water and tucked under my ballcap to keep the sun off my neck

I have a few of different thicknesses. Iv never actually used one though. Thin ones(the $1 tubes sold on eBay) look too thin to be useful in cold weather. Never been cold enough to pull out my columbia omnitech one.

I've got a thin one and a thicker fleece one, they're great paired with a beanie, you can cover up everything and just leave a slit for your eyes. Like a balaclava only way better and you don't look like a gimp

I find them incredibly useful for a variety of stuff. Headband for when you're hot and sweaty, facemask for when you're cold (or cycling), mask-cum-hat when you've got no other headwear, and I also use mine as a pillowcase.

I wear one when I'm on the lake because the glare from the sun reflecting off of the water fucking kills my face. Make sure you chew some gum or something, cause you'll realize how nasty your breath is pretty quick.

Years ago I got the embarrassingly tacticool Recon Wrap. Mainly, it was just longer than a Buff (which I also tried. The extra length really helped.

And yeah it actually does work. Multifunctional, too.

I have several of the merino wool ones, and while they work really really good, mine have somehow gotten holes in them.

I dont know if it's from bugs eating holes in them in storage, from washing, or from just wear and tear but it kinda bothers me since they're not exactly cheap.
Only other complaint is that they can make your face moist while you're hiking, but that's really all balaclavas that aren't 3 hole.
