Birch is awesome. I also like eucalyptus, but it's more exotic. It can grow almost everywhere, and you can even cut it to the ground, it will always grow again. Its wood can't rot, and is very tough yet flexible. And it smells goooooood...

It's green leaves burn hotter than its dry ones, lol.
Burning forests shoot flaming gas balls up to 10km with the wind.
They can also drop limbs at any time without warning, due to a disease preventing chemical located in rings around the base of the limb.
NEVER camp directly under a gum tree.
My family members lived in a hollowed out one 150 years ago.
When dry its very hard to work with, burns easily on a lathe.
The oldest ones 300+ years are a source of water in their hollows, and may contain many sources of food; birds, eggs, insects esp. ants, possums, bats, bees/honey (native Aussie bees don't sting) and occasionally drop bears.
Eucalyptus camaldulensis is my favourite species.

I live in western Oregon, and the Douglas Fir forests everywhere are full of underbrush, much of which is poison oak and blackberries. Ponderosa Pine forests out east have next to no underbrush, just pine needles. Pine needles are the most comfortable bedding, on par with mattresses.

a) yes, the bark is a lot like paper. Burns easily
a2) you don't need to use an axe to gather campfire fuel from it
b) a large patch of bark can be fashioned into bowls and plates
b2) and as a cover of the fish/et.al when roasting food under hot coals
c) the bark often traps water inside-- find a good-sized tree with little bark damage, make a slit near the bottom, and the rainwater runs out.
d) the tea-tree species of paperbark, can, yes, can brew their lives like tea
d2) and you can distill the leaves for lots of tea-tree oil, which is a good antiseptic.

Big Leaf Maple. My favorite tree by far. They look amazing with full leafage, and are awesome for climbing and making forts in. Also, when the sun shines through a canopy of maple leaves, its like heaven on earth. living in the pacific northwest they can be quite common, but large ones don't last too long. I will admit that during winter these trees look like shit though.

Looks like a mangy cat, has spikes that are tough as coffin nails, blossoms that make the best fucking tea imaginable, and wood/bark that burns with intensity. Perfect for nighttime camp fires. And best of all, they are in abundance here.

I'm gonna have to agree with OP on this though. As much as I love fruit it's a luxury and not a utility, birch is possibly the best wood for its multiple and varied uses.

Hickory is also somewhat good because of how hard it is, if you're making improvised tools, you can't do much better than a hickory for a handle.

It also burns really hot and some species have nuts. Hickory Syrup is the coffee of syrup, and I'd suggest it to anyone who enjoys such a thing.

birch is probably one of my favorites. chaga, a fungus grows primarily on birch. it makes a tasty tea, and is supposed to be super good for the body. i have heard they can be found on maples, but i havnt seen that. i'd also have to say oaks are another god tier tree. maybe even cedar. i'm into wooden boats and there isnt anything better for small boats then cedar. lightweight, strong, rot resistant, and smells wonderful.

Big fan of arbutus trees. They're oriental in heritage and they dot the BC coastline. Beautiful colour, and they're satisfying to peel. They also ALWAYS grow towards the water.

I visited America (Virginia) a while back and saw those everywhere. I drove through North Carolina and the trees there were amazing, I wish I could go back to that region again before I die.

Here's a Kwanza Cherry Tree, which is similar to a tree currently blossoming in my area in the suburbs. It's nice to walk through the empty streets on a sunday morning with a gentle breeze and hten strollign through the common. I think it would be better if I got to share this experience with someone I cared about but it's nice nonetheless
