ITT: We discuss gear, ask and answer questions, and post our own stuff.

To start us off, do any of you guys make some of your own gear? I've done simple stuff like char tins and wooden spoons, but I've been seeing more and more ways to DIY pretty vital equipment like alcohol stoves and shelters. Any experience with this?

I just use mine at night, switching out of my nasty wet hiking socks

You can get 'smartwool' or whatever socks that are professionally made with a tight knit, those are fine for hiking

Nice. I've got a big gnarled branch that came down during a windstorm that I'm gonna be turning into a walking stick once it fully dries. I want to sand it so that it's nice and smooth while still keeping the natural shape as much as possible just because it looks so cool.

sup /out/. someone gifted me a multitool for carrying innawoods, but i wasn't able to identify two attachments, because i'm fairly new at this. pic related. one is obviously a ruler, but i'm not sure what the teeth are supposed to do - they're very dull and they don't look like saw teeth and i have a saw on a different attachment. can't even guess what the second thing is. could you help me out?

You can't be this new. Wool socks are superior in every way to cotton. Not just for hiking, but for everyday life. It retains heat infinitely better when wet than cotton, they're more durable, more comfortable (in my opinion), more supportive, and they don't retain smell as easily as cotton or synthetics

They're pretty good. I've used them for the past couple years as a general guideline on what I should get, or where I should start my research. They're geared more towards a classic backpacker/camper than someone into /ultralight/ type stuff, so keep that in mind when you're reading their rankings

What are you planning on using the kayak for, and what waters do you plan on taking it out on?

The type of kayak you'll want is really dependent on how you plan to use it, beyond that just be aware that used kayaks are pretty much always a good deal, just set up a craigslist alert and watch the markets for a few weeks to a month.

Light, casual fishing and day trips downstream. So something a little more streamlined than a stubby fishing boat, but still pretty stable. I don't need it to really excel at either thing, so long as it's a decent all-rounder.

Well with that criteria, something like a larger (16+ ft) sit on top is probably what your looking for with your uses in mind pretty much any material would work but durability wise plastic is nice and you don't have to worry if you screw rodholders/etc into it but weight wise fiberglass is generally nicer although that comes at the cost of it being more expensive and more likely to get damaged although it can be repaired with a bit of work, although I'd also say at that point you might wan't to consider going for some sort of small motorized skiff.

I grew up with a father who had a a small flotilla of kayaks and canoes and despised motorboats so I saved up for several years and bought myself a small skiff much to his dismay,
smaller boats (12-15) ft can pretty much do any waterway that a kayak could and are vastly more seaworthy plus if you plan on going on rivers with a stiff current the ability to go upstream with relative ease is nice, currently you can get an older small 2-stroke outboards fairly cheaply used ,(see 3-500$), and they're really easy to keep running because of their simplicity, you just have to remember to mix the gas, throw in an aluminium hull and trailer that you can find for around 500$ and you'll have a setup that can be towed behind any sedan but beats a kayak in everything except extreme shallow water running.

yuh it’s molle design but it has a lot of padding and support so it’s pretty comfey. I would get the desert colour but dark green goes better with where I am, and it’s pretty cool too

i have the zebra and i like it a lot but with 1 primary complaint. oil starts smoking almost immediately, and i dont see how. no other pots at home cause oil to smoke until it gets screaming hot, but the zebra starts smoking as soon as heat is applied. what mechanics are at play there?

Got my first shipment from Varusteleka today, had my Trangia 27 and tea kettle in it, along with a 10 pack of both milk and dark chocolate Sho-ka-kola in it, for stocking stuffers.

Can't wait to try out this little stove this weekend. And it is much smaller than I expected. I probably could have went with a 25 series, but this will work.

Wool socks are thick, so no you won't get a blister.
I get blisters on my pinkie toe, but a painless one that just leads to peeling. But I have wide feet, I would have serious blisters without my thick socks taking the friction for me.

Think about the story that a fabric's fiber content tells. Nylon and polyester can add some water resistance/durability and have their place, but if you see acrylic in there, you're being scammed. Its ONLY advantage is being dirt-cheap, and the only reason it would ever appear in a $160 shirt is that the manufacturer thinks they can make a few more bucks off of you. A 25% wool shirt can hardly even be called a "wool blend..." that's a plastic shirt with some wool thrown in to jack the price up.

Two anons here own one of those AFAIK, me being one of them. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty good pack as long as you know what to expect from it. It's not an out-of-the-box hiking ready pack, but I've done some experimenting on it and I'm pretty sure that it's only because of the lack of hip belt. The thing is also built strong enough that I'm pretty sure my future grandchildren are gonna be able to use it. It also costs literal pennies in comparison to any similar bag on the market. Comfort could definitely be better, but I'm perfectly fine with it as long as I keep the weight under maybe 35-40lbs. You gotta remember that it's fundamentally designed to be a winter pack that's meant to be worn over top of a jacket thick enough to handle the Norwegian winter. Under those circumstances it's just as comfortable as nicer hiking packs with padding and straps out the wazoo. If I were to guess, I'd say it weighs around 4 or 5lbs empty, but I've never bothered to properly weigh it.

tl;dr: Built like a tank, cheaper than dirt, not light but not heavy, functionally comfortable but would not use for more than maybe a weekend trip in it's stock form.

PRO TIP AND YOU BETTER FUCKING LISTEN TO ME IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY THIS: go to a pharmacy or the pharmacy section of a store and find a product called 'mole skin'. There's a few generics as well. Basically it's an adhesive dressing that will take the friction from a high rub area if you find you are developing a blister.

Grab at least two of these, they're cheap. This way if your shoes turn out to be bad for hiking, you at least don't have to deal with the consequences as much.

Other things...get a backpack, if you have a school bag just use it to start. Bring at least one or two liters of water for a few hours of hiking. A few good snacks. A lighter. Weather appropriate clothing.

Honestly there's more you SHOULD have, but this will at least have you reasonably prepared to just try hiking. If you like it you can accumulate 10 Essentials (or 14 essentials if you prefer), more appropriate backpack and clothing, and whatever else. But you don't necessarily _need_ that if youre not gone more than a couple of hours and you're in a well travelled area.

I made a walking stick last summer from entirely salvaged materials. Cut down a green sapling, skinned all the bark, dried it, created a grip using some rope and some fish hooks I found at my campsite, sanded it down. Needs to be fairly warm as temperatures in the winter are usually -5 to -20 degrees celcius. In addition there's a lot of snow and there might be a good amount of snowfall during the nights, so needs to be fairly strong.

Anyone who can provide some pointers to good tents from these requirements?

For camping in northern Norway, I'd recommend something with a synthetic fill just because it maintains it's warmth even when wet. The temperature rating is usually based on how low you can sleep in it without being in danger of hypothermia rather than how low you can go comfortably, so keep that in mind when buying one. Get a bag liner too if you wanna be on the safe side, but make absolutely sure that it isn't cotton. I can't narrow it down to one specific bag for you just because I have no clue what's commonly available in Europe, but I'd suggest checking out military surplus stores/websites for any arctic and winter bags. For the mattress, just get something durable that inflates pretty thick and/or lay out an inflatable mattress on a foam pad to increase your insulation. It's up to you to know exactly what you need though.

I had to use old school gear in basic training because the instructors didn't want to spoil us with modern gear until we finished basic training. During one particular exercise we were ordered to pack lots of stuff for a longer stay innawoods, and those thin leather straps cut into our shoulders like a hot knife through butter. My shoulders felt like minced meat after that. In the hands on the Norwegian army it's quite an effective torture device to make new recruits as miserable as possible :DDD

Why, it's not gonna rain in winter. Minus 20 degree at night is more problematic, like a double wall tent will give you a couple degrees, a fleece liner some more, but you need at least a -12°C comfort rating, also air pad and foam under pad for extra ground insulation.

I've slept outside at -27C with no tent on a regular rollmat in a Snugpak Arctic sleeping bag with A+ results.

Did dig through snow to ground level and create snow walls, but otherwise - nuffin.

Having a decent thermos with a hot beverage when waking up is also neat.

I did basic with a horrible Swedish lk35 pack, Czech steel pot helmet and Swedish chest rig that did not fit my service rifle.

On first hike sergeant took us through a marsh - then said "it's fine to change into dry socks now :DDD", followed by three more hours of marsh.

I think that's just normal for the infantry.

Truth be told, I started out in a bivvy sack (Sunpak Stratosphere without the ribs), but abandoned it pretty quickly upon realizing, duh, there's no rain, and it just catches condensation. So after about an hour it was just the rollmat and the sleeping bag.

Depends. The Xtherm has a great R value to weight ratio, but I find it uncomfortable to sleep on and it deflates often. If those factors matter to you, look into the Sea to Summit line. They're incredibly comfortable (I'm also a side sleeper) and inflate/deflate very rapidly. A little heavier, but you'll get the same R values as the NeoAir

That's not the problem. An unexpected dowsing of the bag is more the worry.

Cross a stream get it all wet, tent leaks while you're asleep followed by the coldest night on record, etc.

It's the same thing with cotton clothing, if you can be SURE it won't ever get wet your fine, but an unexpected situation can be significantly more risk for hypothermia.

Also, people camping next to cars can take more risks with there clothing and sleeping bags than true survivalist campers.

I had an OtterBox case once. Defender version. Not waterproof but rugged. Had to get rid of it. Water was always getting under the screen protector, making it impossible to touch the screen until I took the whole thing apart and dried it. I pulled the screen protector out entirely, and it wasn't long before the textured rubber on the back of the case all started peeling off. Luckily I got it on a pretty deep discount. It's insane to me that people will pay $60 for a Chinese plastic sandwich wrapped in shit-tier rubber. Did a damn good job shrugging off bumps and bruises though. From now on I'm sticking to self-adhesive screen protectors paired with a basic TPU case. I don't expect LifeProof cases are much different... hell, they're under the same ownership.

Basically it's a fancy feast cat food tin (3oz), a small tomato paste tin inside of it and with a layer of felt in between to act as a wick. Unlike most DIY alcohol stoves I have tried it is very wind resistant and very hot. Can't turn the heat down which is a flaw as it burns a lot of fuel doing something basic like cooking pasta. Can heat half a litre in around 6 minutes, good for boiling water though and that's about it.

If you only go /out/ every once in awhile, this is a pretty great list for no other reason than the price. $280 for all three of your big 3 is great (I paid more than that for each of my big three individually). This is what I originally thought/did. I bought an Osprey 65 and it's still my main pack (48 nights/500 miles logged on it) until next month when my new pack comes in. I used it on a 10 day trip this summer and still didn't use the full 65 liters. I consistently really only use around 35-40, which is why I'm getting a smaller, lighter pack now. Unless you're planning on doing a whole lot of extended winter camping somewhere really cold, I don't think you'll ever need more than a 65.

Have their atlas cyclops 2 here. Got it nearly new from a soldier who's leaving service, it's too small that's why my manlet brother will get it, so can't say anything about comfort, but it's well put together otherwise.

USING A STANDARD POT, boil water over your stove, THEN pour the BOILING water INTO the thermos®. The thermos® holds the heat because vacuum is a really good insulator. Cap it up, toss it into your pack, let it cook while you hike.

I know Ospreys All Mighty Guarantee is great, but review of the Gregory say that it's made well enough that they hardly ever use the warranty on it anyways

Use the compression straps, they can handle a lot of stress and you need them to prevent the pack from sagging outward when it’s not filled to its max. Next to the zippers you use to enlarge it to 100 liters there are smaller zippers with some kind of side pockets which I always found useful for stuff on the go.

How do you calculate the temp rating for combining sleeping bags?
I have an oversized -5 synthetic bag and a 0° UL down bag. Which temp will I be comfy when I'm in the down bag, which is inside the synth bag?
Playing dumb, a 0° rating on the down bag means, that I could have 0° in the synth bag, and that in turn would be meant to keep me at 35° (or whatever body temp is) during -5° conditions, so it has a temp delta of 40°, so in order to have 0° at the synth/down border, i can have -40° outside, but yeah, obviously that's not how it works.
And then there is the whole issue that the ratings are almost never matching your personal preferences, but I'd like to figure out a way to get a rough idea for expected "safe" temps.

But I guess it's not one of those systems that really does not work with anything else, like MSR reactor. But not 100% sure. I can't really imagine why it would not work, but still, I'm curious.

also, why the fuck can't swedes not measure volumes? Says 1.8l on the package, but realistically, if you don't want to spill it all over your cooksite when it's boiling, you probably cant realistically boil more than 1.4l of water.

What are some durable high end packs that can carry larger, heavier loads (50#+)? I want to buy American but it's all ultralight stuff like Hyperlite. Should I look at hunting packs? Anyone still making good external frames in the States? Also willing to consider Canadian and European manufacturers

Mardingtop is made from polyester (600D Oxford fabric), not nylon let alone Cordura and in order to make it have some degree of meme water resistance the Chinks added a PVC layer behind almost every panel - just like the thousand other Chink tac packs available. Unfortunately this only adds unnecessary weight and stiffness to the packs since the zippers and seams are not sealed. For water resistance it is much better to just use a pack cover. And also the stitching is only up to standard on the higher priced Chink brands such as Yakeda. And guess what, the higher priced ones are all made out of 1000D nylon/Cordura and none of that PVC layer bullshit.

Their quality has gone down drastically in the past couple of years. Lots of Xpac and cuben cottage packmakers popping up though. Check out Superior Wilderness Designs. They use Xpac instead of cuben. Vx03 or Vx21
