Pretty much.
You pay a 100 euro subscription to send pre defined text messages to a contact and SPOTS contact centre. Who will call the local rescue services you can also pay extra for GEOS insurance and they will send someone to get you.
You can also upload status reports etc to google maps or spots own portal.

You hit the button and it alerts local search and rescue through whatever system they have, who will swing by in a helicopter to save your ass. If you broke your leg 30 miles into the wilderness and 2 days into a 2 week trip, this could certainly save your life. Some idiots have abused the things and gotten helicopter rides because they ran out of food or whatever.

I don't have first hand experience with those, but I've heard that compared to a real PLB, those spot things are crap.

I have one with a wistle on the clip but I rarely wear it. if I planned on goin anywear I would need it I'd already have parachord. I just have it strapped to my bag. I don't care to learn to make one and I don't care to unwrap it if I need just a bit of chord. basically if I don't have my bag I don't need it cause I have chord in it. and if I don't have my bag I don't need it cause I'm close to civilization. only time I'd wear it is if I had a base camp set up somewhere and had to walk a distance away from it which seems unlikely
