Isn't that just a really small lightweight tent ?

Imagine like 4 thick sleeping bags shaped like a small tent that would keep you really warm at 20 deg and have room for the pack. Kind of like a super insulated small tent.

Think about what you're asking, though. Why have a thick ass sleeping 'bag tent' that you can only use during the cold when you can use the same tent and swap out various thickness sleeping bags as needed?

How about this:
You're going to antarctica for a 3 month stay
in the snow.
You will be bringing a 3 man tent maybe like OP pic related, knowing it might not be good enough, but you have to find the best available for < $200.
What tent would you pick ?

If it was strong nylon on inner and outer shell
with good poles it might not collapse as readily in a heavy snowfall.

If you got stuck for some reason in sudden uncharacteristically cold -50 or such, it could
save your life.

The overall setup would just be more snug in general at below 0 temps.

I'd guess the larger tent because of more air insulation.
But if it's too big your body won't be able to heat the air efficiently.

Is a 4 season tent just all around waterproofed better so it can be buried 2 ft in snow ?
I looked at some of these $500-700 tents earlier in the thread and it's hard to see what their claim to fame is.

I've heard mold can be an issue with the canvas.

The primary difference is construction. Four season tents are made to take extreme cold (which would make normal materials more brittle), extreme wind, and the weight of snow piling on top.

That said, you need a 4 season tent for arctic winter conditions, most run of the mill 3 season tents will cope with an occasional snow shower and stuff like that.

They are less prone to get damaged in extreme weather conditions due to superior materials and workmanship. While this is important for arctic explorers and professional mountaineers, it isn't so much for the average camper/hiker. You can do pretty well with a mid range tent from a reputable maker, depends a bit on what you want/need and whats on sale at your local store.
