much of the west was purchased or won from spain and later mexico. They settled it, and they never left.
even when we had gold rushes and other migrations probably most of the people that went west were from Europe, not the US. Examples are the Mormon migration where the church paid for thousands of European immigrants to Utah. Or the Colorado gold rush where most of our miners came from Cornwall, Italy, Ireland, and Austria. Or the Chinese imported to California during the gold rush.
it's true all you'll read about are Americans, and it's also true that most of those immigrants eventually became americans. But americans played relatively small parts in settling most of our country.
