Does anyone here have plans to buy cheap property in a rural non-commuter town, even if you work and live in the city?

Thinking of buying something outright just so I will always at least have somewhere to live no matter what happens, the bonus being that I can also go there during vacations, etc. Prices are so cheap, and if i own it outright then with no mortgage I can still rent a room in the city until I get the chance to leave wageslaving permanently.
