if you insist on going in these mines at the very least spend the $1000 for a multigas kit, buy a fucking rebreather or better yet SCBA, and travel roped to a group of men large enough to drag your unconscious ass out of the hole if you go down.
this is basic stuff if you want to live. Even then it's no guarantee of safety, people with the proper equipment and training die in mines and other enclosed spaces ALL THE FUCKING TIME.
