its really better to go to Oregon or Washington or Idaho or Montana or Nevada or Arizona or new mexico or Utah or mexico but if you dont know any locals in any of these other states just stay in ca

I'd check out Big Sur for the coastline and redwood forests, Joshua Tree or Death Valley for deserts, and anything in the Sierra Nevadas that is over 8000 feet for the alpines.

Definitely one of the better coastal city areas but still pretty urban and industrialized if you're going there just for hiking.

The Sierras are GOAT. Beginner mode is to just check PCT Trailheads north of Kennedy Meadows, can't go wrong that way. Personally the stuff just above Bishop is my favorite for nostalgia reasons, countless glacial lakes full of trout and if you somehow get bored of the mountains you can go down into the surrounding dessert and see some cool stuff and meet climbers. Joshua Tree is my favorite desert, and Torrey Pines has the best beaches connected to hiking trails in SoCal.

monterey bay has god tier sea kayaking. 50 blue whales in the bay this week, plus killer whales, dolphins, sea otters, and a sea nettle bloom.
