I mainly fish this golf course by my house, as I have no car so no means of traveling to other places to fish other than the creek that runs by my house, also. I fish for pretty much anything but I target certain things certain days. Mostly been doing carp and bass because they're both fun to catch, but I fish a lot for crappie too because they taste amazing.

what do you use for carp? when i tried fishing for carp with a slip sinker rig the fuckers would take the bait and the moment they would feel the tension in the line, they would spit it out.

Catch of the day, Los Angeles River. There's no scale in the photo, but he was about 16" or so. Not huge, but fun to catch. Got a couple smaller fellas as well.

Around sunset a wise old Asian man showed up. His English wasn't great, but he was really friendly and gave me a bunch of advice, which was sweet, but a little annoying.

Don't get me wrong: I'm always willing to learn new things, but he kept showing me how to grab them by the gills. I don't think that's good for catch-and-release (don't worry about their invasiveness - the last population sample on the LA River netted literally zero native fish species); the little cloud of blood they leave behind as the swim away strikes me a bad sign. I smiled and said thanks, but inwardly I cringed when he grabbed my fish. The man's heart was in the right place, and I didn't want to spoil his grandfather-imparting-skills thing.

You're set up so the line moves freely through the sinker, right? You don't want them feeling the weight until it's too late.

You might try a "hair rig" (pic related) where the bait isn't threaded directly onto the hook. The British swear by it, apparently, and their carp are practically PhDs. I've used it, but I didn't notice a difference, so I went back to a standard rig and just searched for more naive fish.

yeah, the sinker was set up so it could move about 2 feet up and down the line with two beads restricting further movement. it was supposed to be a self hooking rig, but obviously that didn't work out.

i also heard about the hair rig and tried it, but now i use the uncle josh dough bait and just mold it around the hook. the bait definitely gets their attention, they just spit it out the moment they feel the line. i literally watched my line get pulled maybe a few inches at a time and immediately go slack multiple times at a lake where i saw a shit ton of carp rubbing against each other near the shore.

Hmmm... I've never tried a self-hooking setup, but it sounds like these fish are wise to it. I like to sit and hold the rod so I can strike the instant there's a nibble, but I know that's not for everyone. Maybe circle hooks? I've never gotten a carp on one because I'm too spastic and I need to strike, but some people have great success with them.

You might try asking the Brits for advice

Bumping because we need a good fishing thread.

Caught these today Kayak fishing along with 5 Trout which I didn't keep. Pretty small but the smaller they are the better they taste.

Me and the inlaws caught pic related last weekend. Followed the suggestion several people posted in another thread regarding mac&cheese cheese for catfish bait.

We used chicken gizzards coverd in the cheese, and a couple of cheese sauce variations, the one that got the most attention from the fish and ended up catching this guy was the kind of cheese that comes pre-mixed in a sauce packet with an extra powder packet thrown in. I tried powder-only but it washed off almost immediately. You could probably use the cheese spread that comes in a can instead of the pre-mixed mac&cheese stuff.

While we only caught the one catfish this time out, there were other nibbles and this was a good catch for this time of year here considering most lake bottoms are still cold and the catfish usually aren't very active until July or so.

Excited to see what macaroni and cheese sauce can do once it really gets to be catfish season.

Although My buddy and I went out shark fishing in the yaks once, we both hooked up at the same time. I got my 4 footer on the yak and he was trying to take a pic (with my phone) and his shark got between us and dove. Flipped him right over...with my phone. He lost all his tackle and we almost got stranded. We were about 1 mile out when it happened and the chop made it impossible to de water his boat. Eventually flagged down a small sail boat that towed us to the beach.

Redfish taste allot better than trout. Not to mention they get full of worms to the point of in-edibility and stink. I don't keep them anymore because I got tired of opening a fish up and the filet being so embedded with worms I would toss it.

Smaller fish was 18" on the nose bigger one was 19 and quarter. I think it's 18" in FL not sure, I live close to the Alabama/Florida line and fish bama most of the time where it is 16"

My buddy caught these the same trip, Speck was 26"

Alabama Gulf Coast, they have it bad here but it's only the specks. You can tell usually how bad they are if one of the fangs is missing. I just lost my taste for them though after so many bad fish so I stopped keeping them. Worms are safe to though apparently.

Different setups per lake, if I'm having a nice lazy day a bobber/minnow setup. If not I've used plenty of fake baits, worms etc to catch them as well. Once you find them they aren't hard to get on your hook.

I used to catch catfish with my buddy in Central Florida using a handline. We used a piece of hotdog as bait. We usually caught two gar to every catfish. Gar love hotdogs.

I caught these both on my birthday, both on the last minnow. I was sure the big one was a dogfish and was pissed as hell until it came up and rolled. Then I started flipping my shit because I was only using 5 lb. test line. It ended up weighing a little under 6 lbs.

The big one was fucking full of roe, it was awesome.

Yessir. Kind of a neat place to fish, there's this shoal in the middle of the sound. In the 1930's some doctor had his house on the shoal. The house is gone but the freshwater well is still there, the trout love to hang out there.
