Whatever you find comfy. My hammock is a thermarest slacker single. I like that's it's made of a single piece of fabric, unlike Eno's which has a seam that can get in the way of a diagonal lay

I use the Warbonnet Blackbird with a Zpacks cuben fiber tarp. I just ordered a Dutchware continuous ridgeline and some snakeskins today. Hopefully I'll get them before my next /out/ing in two weeks. My next major upgrade item will be a new underquilt. Currently, I'm using an Outdoor Vitals Aerie 30. It's okay. Very versatile, but I don't think it's rated accurately. Probably closer to 40 degrees.

For many years I used a cheep milsurp shop jungle hammy. I put spreader bars on it because it was more comfy even though it was less stable.

Now I use a DD jungle hammy which is gloriously luxurious compared to the old one. I rig it high and tight. It's tailered with some sag built into it (unlike if you made it from a flat sheet) so you can make it tight without actually making it constricting on you.

Pic related - you may notice that what's left of my old jungle hammy is now my bench/gear holder/side hammy. It's a very nice setup.

This. Double lets you lay at more of an angle or gives you more slop. The sides will come up higher giving you a bit of a windbreak. Completely workable. I prefer the extra fabric

Double hammock really means it's too short and too wide. Trust me, they suck.

ENO hammocks are shit, thry are however a fantastic marketing company. They have the doublenest, now every cheap Chinese hammock says it's a double.

They all are about the same material, about 9ft long or less, and about 6 feet wide. They have 3 panels of fabric as well. All of these things make them worse.

You want at least a 10ft hammock, 11 is ideal. The width isn't as much of an issue, but the extra width just ends up being extra material flapping in your face all night.

If you like to use that extra material to "cocoon" around you, you're an idiot who has no idea how to hang a hammock.

There's a reason why all high quality cottage made camping hammocks are 10ft+, and made with a single panel of fabric.

You need a hammock at least 4 feet longer than you are tall, at minimum. The 2 feet above your head and below your feet are where the hammock gathers together. It narrows to a point, and isn't really usable space.

A short hammock ends up giving you bad calf ridge, and prevents a proper diagonal lay.

Hammocks that are too wide, as stated before, just have extra material that gets in the way. It's really annoying to have it in your face all night.

Having 3 panels of fabric that have seams. You end up laying on these seams, which don't stretch the same as the fabric. It's just uncomfortable.

That looks like the same one as the old one I used to have yes. Can't say anything about the quality but looks the same, medium-tier adequate. If you're a fatty-boom-batty do check the weight rating, and you'll need carabiners and treestraps and whatnot as well. Also consider installing a spreader bar but try it without one first. To be honest I got mine for $20. At that price plus slings/straps/hardware you might be able to just upgrade to something better that comes with all the straps and slings and stuff. I mean, the DD Frontline and Travel hammocks come with all that stuff and are like $100. Also way more comfortable because it's a real hammock and not just a canvas stretcher.

nice, was thinking about it for a roommate since we wanted to go for a short weekend trip but we both have almost no gear with us but a hammock, tarps, and some blankets. dunno if we'll actually go through with it or just wait to get our real gear.

If paracord is all you have, then sure you can rig up a hammock and sleep in it with paracord as a suspension.

Is it going to support your weight? Maybe.
Is it going to sag and stretch in the night, requiring readjustments? Yes.
Does it hurt the bark of the tree? Yes.

Straps are just better, they are so much easier to set up. I've been using a daisy chain setup for a few years now and it's convenient as hell, they're only about $20 as well. I'm looking to try out some descender rings or a woopie sling setup sometime next year, but for now my big focus is getting an underquilt. Seems to be next level cozy, and I always have problems staying on my pad at night.

Ohhh, yeah you can it's just a bit of a process. In my first image you can sorta see on the green hammock there is a "ridgeline" tied with paracord.

It's a bit of a process, you just have to tie it down, then tighten and retie until it's taut as possible. It took be about 15-20 minutes to get it tight enough to where I like my line to be, but I'm sure you could get it down considerably with experience / some sorta cinch tool.

Alternatively, avoid the whole ordeal and get amsteel :)

I always have problems with my knees being forced to bend the wrong way because the hammock curves, and isn't flat across my (diagonal) lay. I am 6'1", so I suspect the problem is my height.
Is the solution a wider or longer hammock, and couldn't it be either wider or longer and fix my problem?
