Hey /out/,

I have nobody to stay with, and no intention of living in a city again. My plan for the foreseeable future is to buy a sturdier tent and live in an isolated rural region close enough to a village to stock up on food once in a while (I have savings).

Do you have any first-hand experience, advice or suggestions that could help me out?

Stuff I may not have thought about, e.g. bugs, damp, mould, hygiene etc.

You must be more specific about your location, expecially regarding climate.
Also, are you still gonna work or you're gonna be a wood NEET?
Because I'd recommend you to rethink your choice, isolating yourself from society in such a way might be a symptom of something astray in your mind, but I can't know, just be considerate about yourself.

I'm not going to work for the foreseeable future. I've worked an office job in a major city for four years and I am burnt out both by office jobs and major cities. As for mental illness, I just don't function well around masses of people and can't go back to any family, plus housing is way too expensive for me to consider that a possibility in the next several years minimum.

I understand the burnout, but if you are totally convinced to stay innawoods for some time, I cannot stress enough that you might need at least a part time job, not stressful, even a night janitor, because savings can finish and shit might happen and then you'll be burned out and in deep shit, better if you can deal with the exaustion without additional issues.

As for living innawoods, you want a large tent, because you need a place to stay and decompress.
You will need something more comfortable than a sleeping mat if you are planning to live in the woods, look for some kind of stationary camping stuff like moveable beds.
Forget about mold, damp, if the tent starts to get moldy, you thrash it and get a new one.
Bugs you'll have to deal with them.
Hygiene, your best bet is a gym membership where you can go in the morning and take care of your needs, because if you're deep innawoods you'll be forced to use the water from rivers and lake (which you cannot consider safe to drink, by the way) or using a solar shower, also good luck washing yourself in the open in the winter.
You need to be able to gather food and supplies, and to cook them.
Forget using gas stoves for extended periods of time, they are not cost efficient, try using wood or a white gas multifuel stove (which works even with petrol but costs more money.).

I had a relative who basically did that. Not a tent, but a shack he made on his property. He bathed in the stream, shat outdoors etc. He'd been homeless before in a major global city, so I don't think this was any really big deal for him. One thing is that he lived about 30 minutes drive from civilization, which was pretty dangerous, but he had neighbors of sorts (hippy drug dealers and the like) who would stop by every so often to check in on him.

Died young though (early 50's)

Just no. You want a wind/water resistant Bivy with a silk or merino wool liner. No BS sleeping bag or mats, just throw it on the cold ground and sleep.
Forget the laundromat. Soak your clothes in detergent and water, air them out as best you can, then insert them between the liners and the Bivy sack so you sleep on top of them. Light a UCO lantern to keep you warm while you sleep and it’ll also dry your clean clothes overnight.
No gym memberships. Lather and rinse with your water bottle. That simple.
Don’t worry about bugs in the Bivy but keep some bug spray just in case.
If for some reason you can’t find a water fountain, get a lifestraw but keep in mind that most lakes in the US are too contaminated to be purified by anything except a lab.
Read some books on foraging, you’d be surprised by how easy it is. Also soylent powder is a thing.
Stoves aren’t completely necessary but there are some you can buy portable stoves that turn sticks and twigs directly into heat.

i live in a small city in the middle of a rural area and have some friends that 4 years ago went full hippie in a small piece of land they rented to a catholic order thas owns a HUGE area.

they are close to a river and where they settled there was an old and broken windmill that they fixed to get drinking water. they planted a medium size organic garden and live out of the crops and selling vegetables to the hippies and veggies in town.

they lived in tents for 2 years until they fell appart, and then they moved to small adobe houses that they built themselves (i helped), half of heir height digged under the level of the terrain, completed with reclaimed wood, windows and doors.
even if it's not my way at all, i must say that these houses are really comfy. i've stayed overnight in all of them in summer and in winter (0° to 38° celsius) and they perform beautyfully. pic related, one of the houses before finishined.

this guys are not the stupid kind of hippies. they work theyre asses off in the field. recently they rented 4 mor has. of land and they are harvesting organic rye, barley, wheat, etc, and earning a decent amount of money because organic pays more for ton, so they are planning to buy the land.

they are really frugal and strict in their life, which i think is a must to this kind of projects to endure. f.e., they welcome volunteers but nor drugs, nor alcohol is allowed in the community. they have not electricity, although they are thinnking in having some solar or wind generated power soon (here is windy as fuck).

they live pretty well, but to stay with them you have to endure all the hippie pachamama/motherearth culture, drums and panic flutes included.

here's a more recent pics of the same house, during the winter. by now they have improved the roofing a lot with a layer of wood and light adobe mortar insulation under the tin.
trenches were digged in the early summer, so in a week or so they were dry, while the walls were built. only then they put the roofs.

again, not my style but i was really surprised by how comfortable the houses are, one of them can acomodate a couple and two children and they've been living there for more than 2 years. they've put special atention to interior finishing with adobe plastering and painting. super hippie but nice and clean.

they built them really fast and mostly with local materials, i think it can be a good option if you want to to go off the grid for a while.

outdoor weed is seasonal and will probably take 6 months from start to finish location dependant, but grow a big enough crop and a few pounds is easily accomplishable even in England. Make a bed a well tended bed where NO-ONE goes and make sure no-one sees you going there. Also use outdoor strains bred for your lattitude.
